Changing Directory Path / Structure

Just started using AM and it seems great so far. My first question is....how do I change the paths and filenames of where everything is published? Right now it is pretty ugly - http://www.mydomain.com/artman/publish/article_2.shtml what I really want is http://www.mydomain.com/cities/paris/hotels.shtml How do I go about doing this? ( It looks like setup -> server -> directories? I don't want to screw anything up just yet...) Thanks in advance. gamb

Hi gamb. Thanks for posting and welcome to the board! There are actually a couple things you’ll want to have a look at. The first is really easy and is on the General tab of Setup Options. Look for a check box labeled “Article Filenames”. Check that off then hit save and now on the Article Editor you’ll have a new field to enter the file name of your article. If you leave this blank for any article, it will just revert back to the old naming scheme. The second part has a couple different options depending on how you have things setup. Did you just want all your articles to be published to the cities/paris folder? Or was that just going to be for the paris sub-category of your cities main folder? If everything is going to end up here, then you’d just need to fill out a new Publish DIR and URL on the Server tab of Setup Options. The DIR is the path on your server to the new publish folder while the URL is what you would type into your web browser to see files in this folder. If this was only going to be for the Paris sub category you would end up doing the same changes, but this time, on the Category Editor page of your Paris categories. At the bottom there, you’ll see a Publish DIR and Publish URL as well. These work the same as the ones on your Server tab but the settings will only effect that one category. Does all that make sense? Let me know if you need anymore details on anything . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Thanks much Ross. What I want is for my articles about paris to be located at: europe -> paris -> and my articles about london hotels in: europe -> england - london -> hotels so I've checked the box on the general tab. Next I will check the box on the category page. Do I need to do this for each category and each sub cat? (i have dozens of total categories). On the category setup page do i modify the articles directory / url, the publish directory / url or both? (i did both, but I'm not sure I should have). also: am I not allowed to ever name to articles the same filename? (index for example). That is the normal format I would use the for the top level page of any category, but it seems to be stopping me. Thanks

Hi, Thanks for the post! I'll go through each of your points one at a time for you: >so I've checked the box on the general tab. Next I will check the box on the category page. Do I need to do this for each category and each sub cat? (i have dozens of total categories). If you would like each separate category to publish to it's own folder then yes, you would want to go into each category and tell it where to publish to. While you will need to go through all of your categories, it's only something you'll need to do once so it's not going to be a recurring change you'll need to make often. > On the category setup page do i modify the articles directory / url, the publish directory / url or both? The important change to make in the Category Editor will be to modify "Articles Dir" and "Articles URL" to point to the specific directory for your category. For example, for your London Hotels category you would point to /europe/england/london/hotels/. The "Publish Dir" and "Publish URL" in the Setup Options you would set up for the default publish directory. This means that any category that doesn't have it's own directory and for all of the category index pages, category lists, etc. > also: am I not allowed to ever name to articles the same filename? (index for example). While you're not able to name any articles or index pages the same you actually should be able to publish all of your category index pages as "index.shtml" in their appropriate folder. To do this, you'll just want to head to the Category Editor and click "modify" for your categories. You'll want to find the "Category Filename" option and modify it to use the "Use Filename" setting. For the index page, Article Manager publishes to the folder you have in the Setup Options for "Publish Dir". The reason you can't have an index.shtml is because in this folder Article Manager is already publishing an index file(this will be the index of all of your Article Manager content). To have your index.shtml published to the same folder as your article content you'll just want to put a relative path in the filename textbox that would look something like this: ../../europe/england/london/hotels/index This path should be relative to whatever is set in the Setup Options for "Publish Dir". Give this a try and let me know how it works out for you. If you have any other questions or comments, just let me know! Cheers, Mike Briggs - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

How do I change the paths and filenames of where everything is published? The procedure seems a bit different in Article Manager 2.02. What are the proper steps? We are just finally trying to get started with the program. Carolem

Hi Carolem Thanks for posting! The default paths for where Article Manager publishes its contents to are in Setup Options -> Server tab. It's actually quite easy to make the changes but I am going to go over things in some extra detail just so anyone else following along knows what we are talking about [:]. Once you are on the Server tab, there will be two fields to adjust. First, Publish Directory. This is the folder on your server that the files will be published to. You can use the browse button next to it to surf through and find the right one. The second field will be Publish URL. This is the URL that you would type into your browser to view your published content. It will need to point to the same folder as the Publish Directory. Keep in mind though this one needs to be a URL not a server path. They will have some similarities but are in fact, quite different. Once you make the changes, hit the Publish All button and you are set. That's it though. Give this a shot and let me know how you make out . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Is this basically the same in Article Manager 2 ? It is the "artman" directory that we would like to change the name of (no offence of course - we just want to be different) So do I just change the name of the artman2 directory and make the changes wherever I see artman2 in the Admin >Server Setting ? (sorry I posted in the Article Manager 1 forum instead of the Article Manager 2 Forum) Carolem

Hi Carolem, Thanks for the follow-up! I would suggest first logging into Article Manager and going to 'admin' --> 'server settings', on this page change the /artman2/ directory to whatever you would like to name the directory then save these changes. Next login to your server and change the name of the /artman2/ directories to match the name that you had used in the first step. :) Does this help Carolem? If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! Cheers, Chet Woodside - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi everyone. I have been using AM very successfully for a little while and am looking to make some changes. I have been following this thread along… (I want to confirm the process of changing the path names and filenames when articles, etc are published. Right now articles publish as: http://www.mydomain.com/artman/publish/article_2.shtml what I would like to achieve is: http://www.mydomain.com/categoryname/articletitile.shtml Step 1: I went into the General tab of Setup Options. Checked the box labeled “Article Filenames”. Save. In the Article Editor there is now a new field to enter the filename of article. (If you leave this blank for any article, it will just revert back to the old naming scheme) Step 2: Go into each “Category” For example. I went into “Category 1”, under Category Settings – Category Filename I selected “Use Filename” and then I enter the name of the category I want to use then hit save. *I have done these successfully. But am a bit confused with the next steps and with what to do with the folders, etc.. Could someone help with the rest of the process please! Thanks in advance.

Hi there. Thanks for posting! I am not actually quite sure what your next step is going to be either because it seems like you have got everything going. The only thing I am thinking is that you wanted to create folders for each of your categories and have their articles publish to each of those folders. To start that one off, just go to your server and create all the folders you need. Then, one at a time, go and edit each of your categories and scroll to the bottom where you can enter a custom publish folder. You'll need to set both the DIR and URL. Fro the DIR, you can use the browse button to find the right folder and the URL should be pretty easy from there. Now, by default, the category index page for your categories will still publish to the main publish folder. If you wanted those to be published to your individual folders as well, you'll need to adjust the custom filename you setup for them in your step 2 above. For more details on that one check out this forum post I did a while back: http://www.interactivetools.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=46558#46558 Of course, let me know how you make out . ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com
