Triggering RSS on IIS server Can't Post

Hi All,

Our site's running on a hosted ISS server (i.e. I don't have much access to AT jobs, and have to ask for permissions to be set etc.).

I would like to set up RSS - have read the forum post on how to set up the .xml template - all fine. However, I don't see how to then make AM trigger the update of the RSS xml, without using something similar to a cron job. Is there another mechanism? Can AM be made to update the RSS whenever an article is published?

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

Thanks for the post! Smile

To set up an RSS feed on your website you're going to need the ability to run some kind of scheduled task.

There is a thread that discusses some options for updating rss.xml whenever an article is saved, but it will basically be set up to run publishcron.cgi whenever the save button is clicked.

This means that it still isn't an option for your server that won't allow you to run any scheduled tasks.

As RSS is a workaround with what Article Manager can do I haven't had too much experience with it, but of the RSS sites I've looked at using Article Manager, they've all used publishcron.cgi or some other type of scheduled task.

If you contact your server administrator and give them the details they may be able to set up a scheduled task like this for you.

I hope this helps and if you have any others feel free to let me know! Smile

I had the same problem since my webhost does not offer cronjobs. Embedding it inside AM itself is the best option even if cronjob is available. Nothing is scheduled about it and its cronjob free. It only updates when you add a new article or when you edit and article.

Hi Michael,

Thanks - that's the approach I was considering, in the absence of cron. Do you have any pointers as to how to implement it?

Thanks,

James

Do a search for "rss addon" or importance of rss...and the methods are laid out in that one.
