Glossary add-on for AM!?... Extra support?... Can't Post

Greetings,

This is something that has been brought up by other AM users in the past, and a must in CMS these days for many people...

There are a numbr of CMS scripts that have a glossary or dictionairy module or add/on available.

This does not seem to be such a headache... and one does not have to reinvent the wheel... there are GOOD scripts out there that can be integrated with minimum effort I believe...

Lore KB from www.pineappletechnologies.com has a glossary function... and sometime ago, I suggested that they borrow overLIB and use overLIB as their engine... (overLIB is free, and can be checked out here: http://www.bosrup.com/web/overlib/) and guess what!? THEY DID!

What LoreKB does, is that when a word is added to the glossary list, with alternative or synonims, all appearances of that word are automatically hyperlinked!... To hardcode the glossary popups one by one is a pain and waste of time! To have the script egine do it... a life saver!

overLIB is an amazing little tool... and the list support is second to NONE... now... imagine AM borrowed overLIB!... With the tech support here at IT, and on that list... WOW!...

Would this be a KILL and make Am the best CMS out there or what?!... (OK!, OK!, I am biased, as I really need this glossary thing... <GRIN!>)

Any possibility you IT AM wiz developers give this a shot!?... Can't be too hard... and it would make it SOOOOOOO nice!...

The only request I would make, would be that the Glossary in AM would have a number of choices so one could enable it all over the site OR only in the body of the articles (content) for example... (I guess a tag would be placed limiting the scanning function of the glossary, something like STARTglossIndex /STOPglossIndex, and this would be placed at the opening and closing of the content, like for article summaries and the body of the articles, but nowhere else...)

If this is not gonna be considered... is there any AM users out there who may have implemented something like this? (Maybe even using overLIB)!?

Other than making it available for everyone... and since you do accept orders based on an hourly fee contract basis... how much would it cost to get this implemented into AM? (Like Lore KB does...)

If too explensive for a single user to support... maybe we could see if we could find a number of AMers interested and spliting the cost?... Count me in for starters!...

IT has an amazing crew... but things move ahead so slow sometimes... maybe we could also get some sort of support system working so we could give you guys an extra hand, financially speaking!?... (I am thinking aloud as I go... please nobody trow no stones... this is family talk of sorts...) but I do really think that sometimes if we helped these guys a bit, we could get them the means to hire some extra hands&programmers and help things move a little faster!?... Maybe even create some sort of fund for specific modules or aspects of the develpment process? A target(s) could be set... then people would donate towards that target, knowing that once it would be reached, it would be given priorty and be aaialble soon(er)!?...

Anyway... can you IT wiz programmers tell me how much would cost to get overLIB hooked into AM, like Lore KB did!?... I am REALLY interested in this and I will consider paying for this...

Thanks a million!

Joa1

Instead of replying to your email I thought I would post here for any others who may want this in the future.

You might wanna take a look at a script we just completed in the past month. Its offered here http://www.amscripts.com/amaddons/#insert .

We set it up with a user friendly .ini file so you can list what text you want it to do the auto link to.

We set it up so when a 'save article' button is clicked, it will do the scan at that time and do the auto link while it just searched the $art_content$ field.

Let me know if this is what you had in mind.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the posting -- the direct email was just a call of attention :) hoped you might reply here...

As for insert... not sure... can you point me to some samples of this being used?! I tried visiting http://www.bravesnews.com/ and checked several articles... but could not find a single one with this... can you point me to some specific article or articles where this appears to be implemented!?

Many thanks,

Joao

PS. I took another look at the description of your script, as I can't find any use of it at BraveNews, and I see it "set certain keywords to automatically turn into links the first time their mentioned in articles."

Does this mean that if the word appears several times only the first appearance turns into a link?! Or all isntances of the word turn into a link?... thks!

.

I'll set up a sample to it and maybe do a couple screen shots to it as well. The new site layout of http://www.bravesnews.com will go live during the next couple of weeks and will implore a flury of scripts we've been creating over the last 6 months.

We created to run like the following.

The site has 25 active players at a time, whenever the first mention of a player (Say John Smith) is mentioned, it'll turn the text John Smith into a link to his player profile showing his statistics so far for the year. We set it up to just do the auto link the first mention of his name in the article. If his name is mentioned a second time in the article it'll just appear as normal text.

The user defines what words he want to do the text to link to in the .ini file as well as what the link will be. The .ini file would look like the following:

John Smith|http://www.johnsmithslink.com

All this goes right in the exec directory of AM. A test article of the script is here:

http://www.bravesnews.com/aparticles/ap/600270.shtml

Notice how J.D. Drew's name is linked the first time but not after that.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply, and clarification. The sample page is fine! I would still like to see this come out as part of AM, and backed up my MySQL, but it could help right now...

I have a few questions, if you don't mind me taking away some more of your time:

1. Can your script / its ini file, handle 2000 links?

2. Can I use a click tracker like below for the links:

http://www.site.net/cgi-bin/myClickTrack/myClickTrack.cgi?id=56&cid=17

(I want to know which terms / links get checked more often).

3. If a term in the ini file appears in the title of the article, does it get hyperlnked, or does the hyperlinking get limited to the body text of the article?

4. If the body of the article already contains an hyperlink, does it get messed up? Ex. "braves" is in the ini file. Does www.thebraves.com get the hyperlink if it appears first? (Like in: visit www.thebraves.com for more info on The Braves.)

5. Can your script let me set the link properties (target window _gloss instead of _blank, its position, scrollable, no menu, no toolbar, 380 x 240 pixels, etc. --- and if not at this point, would you be willing to code it into the script? This is a must for me). (Or should this rather be opened by the window that open, for example?)

When (whishfull thinking here!...) AM includes its own glossary engine, can I simple remove your script, and all is handled by AM's engine from that point on?

6. Does one need to republish all articles when new terms are added to the ini file of your script before they get hyperlinged throughout the site?

7. Last and certainly not least: can a non-programmer get your script installed and configured?

Thanks,

Joao

I am VERY interested in any extra functonallity added to AM, so please just keep as posted on your scripts :)

Thanks for your time.

Joao

1. Can your script / its ini file, handle 2000 links?

There is no built in max number of links. Keep in mind though the more links you have in the .ini file the more time it will take to run through the file. We have it biult in so when you click submit article, it runs it at that time. So there may be a brief pause before it loads the larger the .ini file gets.

2. Can I use a click tracker like below for the links:

http://www.site.net/cgi-bin/myClickTrack/myClickTrack.cgi?id=56&cid=17

(I want to know which terms / links get checked more often).

I assume you normally already put this in the templates/article/default.html file? If so the script would not interfere if that's what your asking. If not clairfy where exactly you intend to put this.

(I added the code exactly you have above and it came out exactly as entered in.)

3. If a term in the ini file appears in the title of the article, does it get hyperlnked, or does the hyperlinking get limited to the body text of the article?

Currently we have it configured to search JUST the body of the article.

4. If the body of the article already contains an hyperlink, does it get messed up? Ex. "braves" is in the ini file. Does www.thebraves.com get the hyperlink if it appears first? (Like in: visit www.thebraves.com for more info on The Braves.)

I did a test on this as we never really thought about it. It does give the hyperlink to the first time it sees this (actually it gives it in the <a href="word"> portion. We can easily fix this by putting in a statement saying to ignore all <a href> tags.

Give me a sample of data you would attempt to do and I'll see if its something that can be done already or with a bit of extra code. I tried it with target_blank target_gloss and both worked.

6. Does one need to republish all articles when new terms are added to the ini file of your script before they get hyperlinged throughout the site?

Yes, any time terms are added you need to either republish, or you can just simply post a new article.

7. Last and certainly not least: can a non-programmer get your script installed and configured?

Actually its easy to set up and take out. All you must do is edit 6 lines in the interface template to completely take it out. We offer free installion of all scripts as this saves much needed time on both sides.

Re: [Mike4172] Glossary add-on for AM!?... Extra support?... [In reply to] Can't Post

Michael,

Once again, many thanks for your reply + time. I am interested in this script, and certaily will place an order for it, if you can take care of some details... Let me try to clarify the points that were not so clear:

Number of links:

With time, they will increase in number... so the 2000 target was just an example... if this would be part of AM, maybe it could easily be handled without problem with MySQL... as is, what would be in your opinion a safe number of links to be easily handled without overloading the script/AM/the loading of each page!?

When I mentioned the using the link format:

http://www.site.net/cgi-bin/myClickTrack/myClickTrack.cgi?id=56&cid=17

I was talking about using this in the ini file. If John Smith is to be found in the ini file, as per your example, then it should be something like:

John Smith|http://www.site.net/cgi-bin/myClickTrack/myClickTrack.cgi?id=56&cid=17

Jay Williamson|http://www.site.net/cgi-bin/myClickTrack/myClickTrack.cgi?id=56&cid=18

etc.

I assume you normally already put this in the templates/article/default.html file? If so the script would not interfere if that's what your asking. If not clairfy where exactly you intend to put this.

... so, no, this would not go on the templates/article/default.html file but on the ini file.

I did a test on this as we never really thought about it. It does give the hyperlink to the first time it sees this (actually it gives it in the <a href="word"> portion. We can easily fix this by putting in a statement saying to ignore all <a href> tags.

This would be great!

Give me a sample of data you would attempt to do and I'll see if its something that can be done already or with a bit of extra code. I tried it with target_blank target_gloss and both worked.

My question is not related to content t be displaied in the popup, but the window that opens when the link is clicked. What I would like to do, is have each link popup a window, target being user definable, either each window on its own window, or, if defined as _gloss, have all popups open replacing the previous window, with scroll bars, but no menu, no toolbar, non-resizable, and placed on the upper right corner of the screen (distances 0 to top and 0 to the right). Each popup window should measure height = 380 pixels and width = 240 pixels.

The content would be just the included in each shtml page, with each glossary definition as per the link --- simply displaying what content is on the shtml page, be it text, an image, whatever.

One other question/sugestion: would you be interested in developing a script to enable the inclusion / automation of the use of overLIB so it could be added to AM!? Might be a must, given the already noted in one previous message... and the fact that it's a mature script, and FREE!... Your script would still have an important role to play, as it could be easily used for many other things...

As for installation, glad to know you do help people get it installed! A time saver no doubt!...

Many thanks for your time.

Joa1

Re: [joa1] Glossary add-on for AM!?... Extra support?... [In reply to] Can't Post

Well basically when we created the script we never did envision breaking off our support team at BravesNews into another company. So we never intended to resell the script when we created it. Our use of the script was envsioning no more than say 200 names/links at the max so that's partly why we inserted the names/links inside of a .ini file rather than storing it in a database.

Having said that, the number of links/names in that file won't be a problem outside of waiting for it to complete when it gets larger. You could even break it off into mulitple scripts if there was a timeout issue with a server when it gets into the thousands.

John Smith|http://www.site.net/cgi-bin/myClickTrack/myClickTrack.cgi?id=56&cid=17
works fine as the script sees it as just another link.

I assume you would want something like http://www.site.net" target=_blank resizeable="no" . All you would do to do something like that is add a " at the end of site address and leave off the last quote. in this case it would be ="no . Since the script auto puts in <a href="">. But for the question it would work.

Overlib just displays messages above links, i'm not sure how this is tied into this script?
