Discuss addon mod idea Can't Post

Is it possible to have an addon that would access category data from alternate installs of AM?

Example:

AM1=NEWS
AM2=JOBS
AM3=COLUMNS
AM4=TECHNICAL DATA
etc...

Then cross reference the AM installs by adding a line like the "Discuss this story" with "Check for Jobs" and "Read Related Columns", etc...

I know that the syndicator can be used to crossover but a link referencing the associated category on alternate installs of AM would be VERY cool!

Any thoughts? Cool

edit: PS. Adding the power of multiple installs of AM together is not a bad idea for sales of AM licenses as well!!!Wink

I'm thinking this is probably not possible or at the very least fairly difficult and complex to pull off. I think an alternative would be to use spare field dropdowns to add complete links to other Article Manager installation categories or related info.

Any one else have any ideas or suggestions?

Brian, can you give me some more details on what you want to do? I'm not sure that I follow you.

Sure Dave:

Let's say that I have 3 installs of AM attached to one domain. What advantages can I create for this? What synergy can I create between applications? Simple, make them work as one.

You know how the Discuss mod can be directed at a category with the code in the GoForum. Category 1 = Forum 6 and so on...

What if a script was created that allowed direct access category to category between AM installs?

Example:
Category A in AM1 = Category F in AM2
Category B in AM1 = Category Z in AM2
and so on...

Then apply that directive to a simple text link added in much the same way as the Discuss is ("Discuss this story"). It could be as simple as "Review Jobs" (of course this can be any link text but for this example I use Jobs).

Then when a person views the Article in AM1 (#1 install of AM) it will show the following:

Sep 10, 2002, 9:28am - [ Discuss this story ] [ Review Jobs ] [ Read Columns ]

Then when they press the "Review Jobs" link it takes them to AM2 and into the assigned category.

So let's say that the AM1 article is in the Motorcycle category. When they press the "review jobs" link it takes them to AM2 and the assigned category of Motorcycle.

Does that make more sense?Cool

EDIT: By the way, I am not suggesting that integration be limited to just AM installs either. RM, Auto, etc...would be nice to integrate.
Brian

Hi Brian ..

I have spent 30 minutes looking for this thread so that i can reply to you.

First of all let me state that i really do wish that the liscence of AM was per domain instead of being by installation. i am saying this cuz i am facing a situation when a bi-lingual site is needed .. now that is off my chest, lets get back to the subject.

Have you find a way to do what you want??
If yes, please share with us ..
if not, i will post something that i did as a work around.

BTW, are you using the same category name in both installations?

Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

Hi MalaK_3araby,

I am using mirrored categories, yes. This way I can create more content in differnet layouts and for different purposes for the same categories.

As per creating synergy between applications, I am still working on more ways to do it. The folks at IT are also looking at some custom options for me as well.

I think it is good business sense to find ways to make groups of your own programs work together. I believe that I am in the minority though when it comes to the amount of IT products I have in use. Currently I have 3 AM, 2 RM and 1 Auto that I am looking at ways to inter-mingle data.

What ideas have you come up with?

Cool
Brian

hiya brian ..
thanks for replying to my PM.

seems the dropdown list is the solution you are using and not much i am adding to that except borrowing the idea from ITolls staff of show/hide art_fieldN.

I am leaving this issue to teh experts. :)
