Automizing AP / Reuters / Other Feeds Into AM

Just recently wrapped up a project in which you can port feeds, from news agencies (such as AP, Reuters, Sportsnetwork ect) that offer the PUT method, automatically into AM. Also was successful in being able to specify what type of articles go into which AM specified directories. OVERVIEW With the PUT method the news agencies open a port connection with the server and send .xml files as news happens. The script looks for new files in the directory, scans them into AM, and then deletes that XML file. Working with a cronjob, your able to have real time news on the website within AM. Although I'm not offering the script on the website (as some adjustments are due depending on your site), just thought I'd share with you all that is possible and has been done. Hi Michael. This sounds like another great addon you got here. Automatically having a feed from other sites added to your Article Manager is definitely a popular featured request and I am glad that you got something going for this. Just to clarify, do you manually run the script and it goes out to import articles, or does it grab the feeds automatically when they are updated? ----------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Ross Fairbairn - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

Hi Ross, Well its designed to run on a cronjob but you can run it manually as well. In order to have real time news from these news agencies, I'd strongly recommend having a cronjob run say every hour or 30 mins, whatever the user would like. That way it can be a set it and forget it feature without the user ever having do anything manually. With the news agencies (AP, Sportsnetwork etc), they offer both a GET method and a PUT method. With the PUT method, they open an FTP connection and put the files in a specified dir. This script looks at predefined times for the appropriate files (standard is .xml), then exports out the title, date, content, meta tags ect, imports them into AM, deletes the original XML file, then publishes the new data in AM.
