Article Manager WAP pages?

I've had someone ask me about having Article Manager output articles in WAP format for cell phone users. Is there any interest in this? Is there anyone with a little WAP knowedge who would like to help out with an add-on like this? Building on the database code we just released it would be pretty easy to do. All we need to do is output the articles in WAP format. If someone could do some mockup pages of how it could look, and, perhaps point us to a good windows WAP emulator we could get rolling on this. Dave, If you'd take a look at my questions on checkboxes and optional inclusion of HTML in templates, I might be willing to tell you that Opera emulates WAP. (Now you know why I'm not a professional Kidnapper!-)
If you use Opera, and go to: http://wap.yahoo.com you can pretend you're on your cell phone. IE 5.5 barfs on the above link, and wants to know if you'd like to download it. Hmph! I DID discover, however, the IE will go to the next page welcome screen. And, IE will allow you to display the source on it, too: http://home.mobile.yahoo.com/ Again, you can pretend you're on your cell phone (Ah, TEXT! Just like ARPANET). Here's a sample of whats underneath the Y!USA page:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML//EN"> <html> <body> <b>US Wireless News<b><br> <ul> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/ts/index.xml">Top Stories</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/bs/index.xml">Business</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/tc/index.xml">Technology</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/pl/index.xml">Politics</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/wl/index.xml">World</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/en/index.xml">Entertainment</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/sp/index.xml">Sports</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/sc/index.xml">Science</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/hl/index.xml">Health</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/od/index.xml">Oddly Enough</a><br> <a href="/raw?dp=news&f=/us/news/lf/index.xml">Lifestyle</a><br> <a title="NEWS" href="/raw?dp=news">Y! News</a><br> <a title="YAHOO" href="/raw?dp=home">Yahoo! Home</a><br> </ul> </body> </html> Anything look familiar? -- Terrill --

Hi Dave, I think WAP pages would be excellent. Count my vote. I have many employees who travel and work at a remote site without desktops available. My dream is to make as much of my Intranet available on WAP as possible. Thanks, Fred

Thanks roi! Do you know any WAP... Do you have an idea how you'd like the pages to look? We need someone familiar with this to give us a hand figuring out the best setup. Volunteers? : ) Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

I looked briefly at WAP when it first came out, thinking it might be the "next big thing". Didnt take me more than a few minutes to realise it wouldnt be I've little interest in having a WAP system, and the way mobile phone technology is going, it wont be long before they have proper internet access, or at least some form of more compliant internet browsing capabilities that fit on a tiny screen. The way forward for this IMHO would be SMS messaging - it's a lot more effective as a marketing ploy, and means the end user doesnt have to keep checking a site that hasnt been updated, but will be notified when "major news" stories happen. There are of course ongoing costs associated with this, but that should be passed onto the end user as a subscription service. Just my thoughts :)

Yea, It might not be a big thing for some but Id like definitly to offer this as part of the subscription based service we are currently running. Our target market are very keen on our news and I would think that some if WAP friendly pages is available on our site, esp the news headlines, theyd want to know more....So once in a while wherever they are, they can log on and check out the headlines. It should not be hard to make WAP friendly headlines. Im just not too sure how the end user will actually log on from his cellphone to the site, prolly if he goes mydomain.com, there will be a meta tag WAP Hmtl which a user on a normal broswer wont see but just cell phones, and than they are presented with a menu, but for now there might just be one menu ie, Fijivillage.com > News Headlines. Cheers.

Another way of doing it is mobile.yourdomain.com or wap.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com/wap/ or /mobile/ etc... Just give them a direct link the wap info. Brian
