Add "Discuss this Article" with Artman and your forum
|
|
|
Hello, I've created a script that makes it easy to add "Discuss this Article" links to your articles and have your website visitors redirected to your forum. Here's how it works. You update your templates so all articles have a new link called "Discuss this Article" that links to a script called goforum.cgi and passes the article number. goforum.cgi automatically checks to see if a new thread has been created about that article. If it has, it redirects the user there. If it hasn't, it automatically creates one, and then redirects the user there. The default message that is created is customizable and shows the article title, summary, and a short bit of text encouraging users to discuss the article. Currently, it's only setup to work with vBulletin. So we could use two things, people with vBulletin to help us test it and perhaps, maybe, if we're lucky, people with other forums and some perl knowledge to copy the vbulletin function and adapt it for their forums. If you have another forum program you want to use this with, let me know. We want to get it tested and working well with vBulletin first though before we move on to anything else. EDIT: Download is now here: http://www.interactivetools.com/products/articlemanager/addons/goforum.zip Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

And I just wanted to add. There's lots of things this doesn't do yet. It doesn't show you how many comments have been posted, it doesn't let you rate the article, and it doesn't let you post comments without a forum. We know that, we're just taking things one step at a time. : ) Also, this script is a great example of the neat things you can do with the database library we released recently. If you're a perl programmer you can take a look at the code to see what I mean. Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

:) I am off testing. BTW, readme file says to upload the files to exec folder ... but the link refrence the script in the addon folder. Another thing ... i am planning on letting Unregistered users (guests) comment as well .. deafault name is "Guest" and there is no pwd ... so how can that be done? Right now if i do not fill the pws field in the script i get: " Error logging in to forum. No 200 response code! at goforum.cgi line 120. " i use PHP3 in my forum .. so if anyone else out there uses php3 you will need to change that in teh script. the good news is that IT ROCKS .. i mean WORKS ;-) Excellent job. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

This is the ArtMan page: http://www.shalankab.com/artman/publish/index.shtml http://www.shalankab.com/artman/exec/admin.cgi login: demo pass: demo VBulletin is here: http://www.shalankab.com/vb2/index.php3 P.S: 1- These demo links will be deleted any time soon. 2- You can register in the Board if you like, but you do not really need to because comments are placed in a forum where unregistered can post. 3- Notice the great htmlArea ITolls created when you click on reply. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

Hi Dave The script is wonderful and i do realise this is the very first release, but here is a feedback: If a thread is deleted after it was posted (manually or by mistake) you get this msg: "Invalid thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster" when clicking on the Discuss this story link. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

I have installed this on my site at www.footballforums.net and it is working perfectly! A lovely addition to a program I already thought was perfect I'm sure you already have a list of features you want to add, so this is to confirm that what you have done so far is fantastic, and works without any problems on my site. It would be useful if the thread created contained the entire news article, AND a link to the actual article (to give it some perspective within the forums). Top stuff

Kinky stuff! Looks great and works great. However just one question, why in the body of the message nothing is posted? It says "SUMMARY:" and the actual news post isn't posted in the body of the forum. Check http://www.wrestling-online.com/fanboard/showthread.php?s=18843889b7eae768f4b53c32d428c364&threadid=81 for an example. For those of you having trouble saying error logging in, you have to create a user and modify the goforum.cgi accordingly. When the topic isn't created and someone clicks, this 'user' will create the topic automatically. Colin Wrestling-Online.com

Hi Canvey :) The news ticker was done by finding a ticker script that could read from an external file, and then adjusting the headlines output to match what the ticker expected to find. Every time a new article is published, the ticker is therefore updated. Thats one of the many great things about Article Manager - you can output pretty much anything you like once you get your head around the template sets :)

Is it just me, or does this script include html tags in the summary where it shouldn't? How can I get rid of this? FYI: I use the WYSIWYG editor in 1.21 SUMMARY: <FONT face="times new roman, times, serif" size=3>Blah Blah Blah.</FONT> --- What do you think about this article? Post your comments below. Help? >Would be great to be able to add this to UBBThreads You bet, we'd like to support UBBThreads. If you could email or private message me an URL for your UBBThreads forum and a username/password that can create threads we can do some research and add support for it. We're also planning on adding support for IkonBoard and Gossamer Forum. Everybody else who's posted, stay tuned, we'll be posting a lot more responses on Monday and hopefully track down any problems for people who haven't been able to get the add-on working yet.
