eCommerce app recommendations?

Hi all -- I was wondering if I could get a few eCommerce application recommendations. I'd like to have something similiar to what they offer at www.vpasp.com, except of course for UNIX. The company's niche is on Windows ASP, and offers some UNIX support, but you need to have Sun ASP /ChilliSoft ASP on your server, which I don't have. My aim is not to have to pay monthly charges to another company for eCommerce with all the bells and whistles, but rather, have a fully-loaded (and reasonably-priced) shopping cart program that I can administer myself through the same type of AM Admin Panel. I've got enough on my plate right now just trying to learn AM, so I don't want to devote time at the moment to learning CGI scripts or PHP or anything that's complicated. I'm essentially looking for an AM eCommerce-type solution in the $300 range. I'm not asking for much, eh? Any ideas? Thx for your suggestion, Maurice! I did see this group when I was doing my research, as well. I'm only worried that I don't have enough time to learn to administer this type of shop; I think I would need to be a bit stronger in the developer skill-set, and I'm stronger as a designer. That's why I'm looking for software that has a lot of security and support features I do have a story to pass on in case anyone else is ever looking for an ecommerce solution. I tried X-cart (at $200) after some 2 weeks of research (for some reason, tons of ASP software available--not as many choices for Linux). X-cart is mentioned in numerous areas, and seemed to be a good solution for me because their software worked on Unix. That's where the story begins...I found out today in their user forum (which could only be accessed following purchase of the software) that all admin password changes are sent to X-cart -- and they happen to be in Russia! I did a lot of research, and don't remember coming across that information anywhere on their site! Oh, my. The first mention of where they were located was in my confirmation emails; I have to admit, that kind of unnerved me. Reading user posts that they're busy trying to figure out a way to bypass this emailing of their info to X-Cart's offices pretty much eroded the trust level there further. Fortunately, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so I'm not in too deep and can try someone else. So, I'm not saying that they're a shady company, I just don't know enough about programming to read the code, see exactly what's going on there -- good or bad. Their terms also mention that if there are ever any disputes, I'd have to go to London to resolve them. Now, London is one of my favorite cities, so I don't want to have to spend my Harrod's time in court, ya know? I think if you're a programmer with Smarty template and php knowledge, X-Cart probably isn't as bad as I may be making it seem here. Their documentation is ok and the software itself is full-featured. For me, I'm just not going to live long enough to learn every type of programming out there; I need an easier solution. I think I'm going to try www.pdgsoft.com next...They're back up to $400, but if it will make me sleep easier at night knowing my customers aren't going to sue me for not keeping their info secure, then it's worth it! Wish me luck! :o) And thx again for your input! Cheers -- Ilona Ilona Meagher ========================= New Media Project Manager http://www.imprintink.com

Hi Maurice, Thx again for your feedback/comments, esp. about my being in my late 20's. That'll put a little spring into my step today! I used to be a flight attendant for American Airlines (for 15 yrs.) and had many, many London layovers. [Never made it to your fair city, so that's on my list for the future.] Harrod's was regularly on my 'to-do' list -- and as I look back on it now, I was in my late 20's when I did most of my International flying. How did you know? [Enter eerie music] If you ever lose your programming job, I think they might have room for you at The Psycic Network! LOL... ...But, I digress. I wanted to post an update on X-Cart to expand on what I'd already written. I received a reply to a post in their forum this morning that explained their new version no longer has the security problem of X-Cart's receiving your Admin passwords via an email update to their offices. You, being on the ball in the php code area probably already were aware of that! They do, however, offer a scaled-down cart called Lite Commerce which is geared towards designers; unfortunately, it just didn't have enough bells and whistles. I think it runs around $100, so its within reach for a lot non-developers on a tight budget. Maybe worth a look-see for anyone interested in an easier-to-use X-Cart. So, yes -- X-Cart Gold is a darn good alternative -- if you have a strong development background. Unfortunately for me, I have more experience queing in lines @ Harrod's than I do with reading code lines in php! Thx again, and I'll post in here to let others know how www.pdgsoft.com works out. P.S. BTW, your www.dogsandhorses.nl site looks great! Ilona Meagher ========================= New Media Project Manager http://www.imprintink.com

Did you ever find the perfect eCommerce script Hi Philip! I'm not sure if I could call it 'perfect', but I finally decided on Click Cart Pro [ www.clickcartpro.com ]. It's in the $150-175 range (when I purchased it, it was reduced in price -- they just had a new version come out, so they were selling the old version for half off). I have it on my server, made a few changes to the templates (not the easiest process, but slowly getting the hang of it). Program highlights: - Written entirely in Perl, uses Perl's DBI module for database access.
- Uses Comma Separated Value (CSV) files by default; allows connection to advanced RDBMS like My SQL, PostgeSQL, and MS SQL Server using Admin utility.
- 100% of the website, online store, and admin utilities displays can be edited using the admin panel.
- You can purchase "skins" in you don't like the default store set-up, or don't want to make design changes yourself.
- The application has the typcial bells & whistles many online stores should have. Check out what they are at www.clickcartpro.com
