e-commerce software

I've used Realty Manager on various websites I've built for clients and absolutely love it. It's strongest feature (from a designers point of view) is that it provides all the database functions and leaves the design up to you! I'm now working for a shop chain who have an existing e-commerce site that just doesn’t deliver. The main problem is that it just isn’t flexible in terms of design – so all the stores created with it have a similar look. I’ve researched many similar products, ranging from a few hundred dollars right up to many thousands – and they all seem to have this problem! Rather than simply providing the functionality, they try and offer a “one stop solution” for all web content. Whereas what I want is a Realty Manager type system that lets me decide how the information is presented. I’ve looked at simple shopping cart systems – but these tend to have other limitations – such as requiring a lot of work to tie in with payment systems. The e-commerce software does this automatically, but at the expense of the design. Does anyone know of a Realty Manager type system that they can recommend? Something template driven would be ideal. Believe me – if I could re-work Realty Manager for selling the kind of products we stock then I would! Any advice would be appreciated. Hi Neil, Thanks for posting. There are a number of different ways that you can handle this type of functionality. While there is not a specific function for a shopping cart in Listings Manager, you can use a third party software to handle the checkout process. So in your template, you can have a link from the listing to the payment gateway. For example I know that a lot of clients have taken Pay Pal and used it as a payment gateway from Realty Manager and Auto Manager with great sucess in the past. I can't think of one particular tool that I would recommend over the other, but if you take a look through sites like HotScripts.com and CGI Resource Index, you may be able to find something suitable: http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Shopping_Carts/ http://hotscripts.com/CGI_and_Perl/Scripts_and_Programs/E-Commerce/Shopping_Carts/ I hope that helps! Thanks for the info. If only other companies were as quick to respond! In many ways, Realty Manager offers the functionality of a shopping cart. But the one thing that discounts it is the lack of a sub-category. The company I work for sells a lot of clothes - so it's necessary to break things down into categories and sub-categories. And that's without the size and colour options! But if Interactive Tools ever think of developing a shopping cart system I'll be at the front of the line! Cheers. you can still work with RM eventhough it doesnt publish sub-categories. the work around this is for you to make the menu (categories + subcategories) static - meaning hard coded and not controlled by RM. this way you make site users "think" they're in a subcategory when they're not. then integrate a third party cart into RM, and you are set to go!
