Student needs help with coursework

Hello. I am an undergraduate studying computer science at Brunel university and would like to request your help with a project that i need to do. I am designing a information system for a property letting company. In my proposed system I will be making a computerised system for a single landlord who owns around 25-20 houses and flats. Some of these are rented to students and some as homes to to families as a whole. The information that I need to know is the exact processes that I would need build my system around. ie. I need to know all the things that i need in the system. For example I need House details like address and number of bedrroms etc. And i will need tenant details like Name, date of birth, telephone number etc. And contract details such as duration of rental agreement etc. Also could you tell me the uses that each of the following would loike from the system: 1) Landlord- ie. would he want reports about rent contracts about to expire, and would he want reports about any rent that is overdue etc. 2) Tenant - would they like the ability to view their rent payment stautus and are there any other facilities that i could provide for them over the internet. 3) Prospective tenants. These are users that can come onto the system and search for pproperties that are free for rent. I am going to concentrate on the implementation of the database on the internet using java with micropsoft access as my back end database. I am not sure about how to go about implementing it. apparently i am to use a JDBC-ODBC bridge to link my access database to java but dont know how to do this and also dont know how it is to be implemented in java. I think its through using applets or servlettes. If you could help with any of the above then it would be most appreciated. If you already have a property letting software then could you please list the tables that you have in the database and the fields which are contained in the tables. Thank you, Hardeep

Hello, Do you have to use access and javascript? In my opinion don't make it hard on your self. use mysql and php. They implement easily and work well together. Making the database is easy and then just write a few php scripts to do what you want when the data is passed from the webpage, from there you could very easily create reports, view status' and make changes without dealing with any extra balogna. In my humble opinion access....sucks and is to much of a pain and javascript should only be used in components of a site not as a main functioning piece, what if the browser has it disables, they can't disable php. My lecturer decided it would be best for us to use Microsoft access and java. I didnt think He meant javascripts. He just wants us to use java. They are meant to link with a JDBC-ODBC bridge but i'm not sure exactly how to do this. Also there is the fact that I have to use password control to let the different user who have different permissions to use the system.

Hi Hardeep! Yes, I must admit that if this were a real-world project, I'd take Kevin's advice and use PHP and MySQL! But since it's an academic project, your lecturer no doubt wants you to work with Java and Access. Understandable. (This is for university? I'm surprised they're not giving you more pointers!) In terms of the sort of information you want your database to store, just take a look at our online demo and click on Setup Options. Here, under the Setup Listings fields, you'll see all the data fields that come built into Realty Manager. That would be a good place to start to see what sort of information we're including. [I thought that maybe if I write that in a smaller font our Product Manager won't notice and get on my case for helping out 'competition' ;-) ] In terms of help with Java and Access, I won't be much use. My Java is rusty (haven't used it since university ;-), and my Access knowledge is zero. But good luck! I'd suggest asking your prof for more instructions. Does your class contain any sort of text for Java / Access integration? (seems a pretty wacky combo, to me...) Maybe spend some time doing Google searches. Ben interactivetools.com

Hi Hardeep! I agree that using Java and Access don't seem to be the best option for your project. I think that a good beginning for your project would be a research about available technologies, comparing advantages and disadvantages between one and the other in accordance to the goals of your project. To make things just work is easy. To make them work achieving optimal results (maximum benefits with minimum efforts, cost and resources) is professional. To decide which technology is the best to fulfill your requirements, is not a matter of arbitrary saying: Use Java and Access!!. It is most a matter of analizing what you want to do with the collected data and then, pick the one that offers you the best options to handle the information. If you make a good research, you could convince your lecturer that you choose the best option. As an architect by profession, I frequently compare both, web development and architecture. The basements, roofing systems, size of the beams etc. of a building depend on the size, usage and some other conditions. Your project is the building. The technologies are your building materials. Why would you use concrete where using bricks is right?

Hi Luis, I go in the opposite direction. I manage a large development consulting shop. We use the building terms to walk customers through the process. Here is a picture of a house go build it for me. No, first you create the blueprint (functional requirements), then you select the materials (technical design), then you construct it (develop the software), then you do your walkthrough (user testing), then you move in (production system). Most people get the house building process on a high level. This has been the best approach when customer ask us for a couple of developers to get their project started. jeff Jeff Cocking Lotus Elan (AM 1.38) VoIP Phone Comparisons (AM 2.02)
