A quick question for you PERL geeks out there. Do you use a specific editor or IDE? I am mightily hacked off with writing PERL in notepad or DreamWeaver and wondered if anyone had a PERL-specific editor they could recommend. There are loads around and all claim to be 'the best' - a word of mouth recommendation might help me sort out the good from the bad. Cheers Regards, http://disofthosting.com Hosting & Stuff

Hi Hugh, I'm not a Perl programmer myself but I have looked over the shoulder of a few of the developers here while they were programming and made note of the editors they were using to code their magic. I noticed that for the most part we use UltraEdit, an excellent all around editor that can be used for coding all sorts of things (HTML, Perl, etc). It color highlights the code and can be easily customized. Here's the link to their site: http://www.ultraedit.com One of the other ones I've seen is called Komodo from ActiveState, you can check it out here: http://www.activestate.com/Products/Komodo/ I hope this helps! :) Luke Holzken Product Development

Hi Hugh, Both of the programs that Luke mentioned are great. I'm a fan of free utility software, so I hate when those trial downloads expire. I found a "free" program that knocked my socks off. It has 4 different user modes, easy to expert. And it comes with tons of bells and whistles. I.e. 450+ Javascripts/VBScripts DHTML Zone with re-usable DHTML scripts Full support for SSI, CGI, Perl, Cold Fusion, ASP. Javascript Rollover Images Javascript/VBScript Object Tree HTML Source Compressor - Reduce webpage file size Flash 4/Shockwave/Java/ActiveX Support 6 Common Javascript Wizards (Drop-down comboboxs, Frame Killer, Browser Detector, Last Modified Date, Background Fader) Includes over 20+ cgi/perl/htmlscripts from Matt's Script Archive with complete instructions on usage. Check it out at: http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage/ The download page: http://www.evrsoft.com/download/ I hope it's what you are looking for... TJ

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll check them out. I'm also having a go with the free trial of OptiPerl from http://www.xarka.com/optiperl/ which looks fairly comprehensive. I'll let you know how I get on (just in case anyone's interested!). Perhaps I'd better buy some sandals. Regards, http://disofthosting.com Hosting & Stuff

Hugh, I've been using a free editor named "html-kit" for a couple of years now with no big complaints. The name's a bit of a misnomer, since it's designed to be used with PHP, Perl, C++, Java and more. But it's a good tool! Check it out at: http://www.chami.com/html-kit/ Ben interactivetools.com

I use Xarka's Optiperl, and have nothing but praise for it. The step-through debugger has helped me out a million times, and because you can run it against remote scripts, it's easy to do your development and debugging on Windows while the script resides on a Unix server (though I believe that competing products may do this too). I also like the Regular Expression editor. I've tried some others: I found Komodo a bit slow, even on a 900MHz machine with 384MB RAM; Perl IDE (http://sourceforge.net/projects/visual-perl/) has some idiosynchrasies, but may suit your needs.
