Email software - have you tested several ones? Your opinion?

As a user of the excellent Interactive Tools products (I use AM on two websites and NM on another one), I think that this forum might be the right place for getting from fellow users advice and opinions regarding an off topic subject, i.e. email software. Like everybody (?), I have been using Outlook Express for years (after using Netscape first). But recently I have been looking for other email clients. Before making the final move to another one, however, I would appreciate to hear about experiences from other people, and I think it may be a topic of general interest. What I am looking for is not just people who are enthusiastic about the email software they have always been using, but who have used and compared several ones. I have now downloaded several "alternative" email softwares - I uninstalled most of them on the same day. Some were attractive but too much limited (the French Kanari, for instance, has a wonderfully pleasant panel, but is not appropriate for somebody with a huge address book such as mine - I am in touch with some 900 people via e-mail...). Other ones had powerful features, but were unattractive or looked really difficult to use. Opera has a good concept, but it is somewhat confusing to use. Right now, I am nearly decided to switch to Courrier 3.5 (a product of http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/, successor to Calypso). But I will wait at least until they have an import function for the OE address book, since I don't want to copy by hand 900 addresses (they have promised it will be available soon). The panel is clear, functions are many - it seems to be nearly the ideal (although it is available only in English at this point, but I could live with it). However, before switching, I am still experimenting in order to make sure I make the right choice. I am currently testing The Bat and Poco Mail. I don't think they are as convincing as Courrier, but I am still willing to reconsider. Poco 3's panel is very nice and attractive, but I find it not as clear as it could be. Regarding The Bat, it is multilingual (this is a plus),its panel is quite clear, but it seems a little bit less enjoyable to use. Well, this is the point which I have reached - but I would be delighted if other users could share their experiences, preferences and reasons for choosing one over the other. Thank you! Tribulatio

Hi there :) I've been using The Bat for years, and I'm quite fond of it. Before that, I used Pegasus ... from about 95-on. I found that, at the time, none of the "standard" (ie, Eudora -- Outlook et all didn't actually exist at the time) free email programs didn't have mail filtering. With the amount of email I get in a day, I need filtering! :) (Being in my *cough* teens at the time, I wasn't able to go out and pay for Eudora Pro.) I switched to The Bat a couple of years ago. It's a nice little program. Very customizable, has good filtering, was actually able to import all of my Pegasus files -- surprising, considering that most email programs can only import the most popular. There are a few quirks, but all in all, it works quite well for me. :) Donna

Thank you, Donna! Yes, I forgot to mention I am testing Eudora too. A serious competitor to the other ones, quite attractive and working well - plus extremely easy import of the OE address books, although it imported only the individual addresses and not the groups. Let's see if there are other enthusiastic users of The Bat - or of other tools... I really appreciate your informative comments, Donna! Tribulatio

You might want to try Mozilla 1.4 (comes with Mail) or Mozilla Thunderbird (stand alone mail client). http://www.mozilla.org/ I don't use them myself (I use Outlook from MS Office) but I've heard people rave about the spam filtering in Mozilla Mail. Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

Interesting suggestion! You were right. Since I had downloaded Mozilla browser recently, I decided right now to test its e-mail tools - which I had considered until now as being just another kind of Netscape mail. Spam filtering is amazing: it correctly identified all spam messages - actually, even a few messages which weren't spam cam to be identified as spam too (test messages which I had sent to myself). So it's definitely worth testing, thank you for the suggestion, I am right now downloading the standalone. For the time being, Courier 3.5 is still at the top of my list. Regarding spam: I strongly recommend MailWasher - since I use it, I get rid of spam before I download it from my server, while keeping full control over all the mail - plus it has all the mail from different accounts in one single window, quite convenient. Thank you! Tribulatio
