Is there any simple way to add the ability to use TABS/INDENTS within this editor, other than using a table?

Are you referring to our WYSIWYG editor - htmlArea? The problem with creating tabs/indents within htmlArea is really a question of how to do this within html. One option, as you noted, would be to use a table; another would be to have a paragraph with a special css attribute specifying the size of the indentation.
Although there's nothing already built-in that does this, it's quite possible (with version 2) to create a custom-made button which would offer this functionality.
But no, besides using tables, I can't think of a simple way to do this.
