Hey all, I wanted to know if there was an add on script somewhere that would allow someone to sign up for an automatic email notification if a car was posted with certain criteria? Say in my case, someone wants to be notified if there's a 1970's-ish, Red, Corvette Stingray posted on my site, could a script automatically email them and tell them that a car meeting their criteria has been posted? I have access to crontabs if need be. If not, is something in the works for this feature? Thanks, Scott Need ImageMagick? GD.pm? You need to GetStacked! Hi Scott, I don't believe there is an add-on that does this just yet, but it's an excellent idea! I've added it to our feature request list, because I can imagine how useful this could potentially be. Would other people find this a useful addition to the software? Ben interactivetools.com

Yes and Yes! I use another script on one of my web sites for classifieds that contains that feature, as well as a send to a friend function. It is not nearly as sophisticated and complex as RM/AM. I could send you the company website link off forum if needed. But it really is a nice addition to offer. My two cents. RG

I think an auto notify would be a GREAT enhancement! Thanks for asking, James

This would be a great feature. It's a bit more complicated than would first appear though. I worked on helping set one up for another application. There are a ton of little annoying issues to deal with such as whether you notify people instantly, or run a process every night. How and when you prune old email addresses. Letting people "unsubscribe" gracefully. Making the notify criteria flexible enough to allow very narrow criteria for large sites with lots of listings and broader criteria on small sites with fewer listings. It made me appreciate even more how hard programmers have to work to create things that often times, to us end users, seem simply and easy. Steve

heh.. no one said it would be easy and I do think that most of us appreciate the products that interactivetools has been able to put out, I know that I do. Looking at this idea more indepth, most of this functionality is already built in to the current scripts. You can already search in ranges, such as the year(s) of a vehicle, and you can already select an exact, such as the color red. You can add to a delete users, and you can add and delete specific information etc... Crontabs would allow for you to run the script as often as you like and most webhosts wouldn't have a problem with a 2 to 4 hour crontab. I don't really think any of us think that these kinds of scripts are easy to create... if they were that easy, we'd be doing it ourselves Scott Need ImageMagick? GD.pm? You need to GetStacked! I had a similar (and absurdly complicated) idea for AM. People sign up for a filtered subscription. For example they put in key words like "space", "nanotube" and "Britney", and they get an automatic email when one comes out with those words... Of course, an automated subsciption letter would be pretty slick to start with.

Hey Ben, Yes. Yes! YES!!! I have some real estate clients that use this feature with Homes.com (which they hate). Adding this feature to RM/AM would allow me to pull them away. It really is the one BIG function that would put RM/AM on the top shelf. That said... I am pleased to see the addition of several of my suggestions in the last upgrade. Clients are loving it. Adding a CMS to web sites has helped make web dev'ing fun and exciting (again) for me. I like building webs... I hate maintaining them. Say "HI" to Luke. Thanks Stan StanTheMan
