Article Manager Features - 2

Hi guys ArticleManager is growing on me by the day. When i purchased AM originally i was not planning on using it myself, but now i do. I guess i just wanna say Thank You once more. Features that i would love to see in AM: 1- A NEW Flag for articles thats less than x days old. 2- Admin Control Dropdown List thats visible only to admins & trusted writers. (quick access commands to admin menu.. i.e: erase, modify, add article) 3- Spare Fields for categories. (can be used for describtion, adding Sponsors .. etc..) -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

>1- A NEW Flag for articles thats less than x days old. How do you want this one to work? >2- Admin Control Dropdown List thats visible only to admins & trusted writers. Just to speed up the process right? What pages would it be on? >3- Spare Fields for categories. (can be used for describtion, adding Sponsors .. etc..) I really like that last one, I think it's a great idea. Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com

Hi Dave 1- A NEW Flag for articles thats less than x days old. If x was = 3 in the config file, then NEW would appear next to each article thats not older than 3 days. If its a variable then we can just put it anywhere we like, and i can see it next to Artcile Title under LATEST HEADLINES and next each article Title. Its eaither cookie based or based on the # of says we specify. Any other idea is welcome. 2- Admin Control Dropdown List thats visible only to admins & trusted writers. Yeah, Just to speed up the process, and it should be used in the Article pages. 3- Spare Fields for categories. (can be used for describtion, adding Sponsors .. etc..) Glad you like this. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

We could also have NEW added after the categories list (in the main index page) that will pull all articles added within x days. I'm not sure but, maybe a pre-defined search can do that? -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW No thanks! A story can only be deemed "new" by virtue of the fact that it is news to the reader. I think ramming it down peoples throats like that would be very "tabloid"! Are you going to put Exclusive on all your news reports too? If you want to achieve this effect more subtly, I'd suggest having your top 3 (say) articles under the banner of "Latest Stories", and the rest of the headlines separate underneath... Just my opinion

lol hi InSite Pick an answer: 1- You can set this to 0 if you have no use for it. 2- I have AM installed in a site thats not updated very frequently (not a news site) .. so the NEW indication, in my opinion, would aid me achives 2 things: readers easily spot whats NEW and it gives a feel to the site that its updated and contains NEW stuff. So i belive this NEW idea of using the NEW tag is great. Re: Exclusive .. hmmm I already use that and others as Prefix for article titles. -------------- Sure you can spell it, but do you get it?

Actually, I'm coming round to your way of thinking. I have some alternatives colours to your NEW suggestion though: NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW Also, would it be possible to have several pop-up windows appear, notifying the user that a NEW article has been posted? I'd also like to see some flashing NEW images appear on the site (athough a warning about strobe lighting might be needed?). I strongly feel that this NEW feature is very much needed. It's a lot more practical and necessary than a lot of the other suggestions made here (PS - Alternatively, you could add this feature yourself in the templates for your main homepage stories) (PPS - Could we also have an OLD tag, as I'm worried my readers wont be able to distinguish between news they have read before)

This seems all in good fun, so I'm going to let it ride, but if this veers into flameland I'm dropping the hammer, locking the thread, and then disappearing it. hehe, we actually have NEW in Realty Manager (really, it's true!). If you weren't afraid of a little javascript you could probably do something with $art_year$, $art_mon, and $art_day$, compare them to the users local time and then decide to print something out. But other than that we'll put it on the suggestion list. : ) Dave Edis - Senior Developer interactivetools.com
