AM Suggestion: AvantGo

This should be an easy one to implement. For those not aware of AvantGo, have a look at http://ami.avantgo.com/channels/index.html To sent up a AvantGo channel on you web server you need a set of web pages, customised so they will look good on a palmtop consisting of an index page and article pages linked to it. It should be asy to alter the AM code to produce AvantGo pages from templates as well as the normal headline pages and article pages.

You could use the webfeed generator to make Palm friendly pages. The webfeed generator could create a page that shows the top headlines and article summaries. I have tried doing this with AvantGo. One thing I noticed is that AvantoGo doesn't seem to handle JavaScript unfortunately. Have you had any success with displaying pages with JavaScript through AvantGo? Tried it. Dosesn't work for me either. I had a chat with their tech support and they told me AvantGo won't handle the javascript because it can't cache the results of the javascript live query to data. Plus, our aticle pages don't look good on the palmtop with the headline & tool bars either side. would be better if it could reference the printer friendly version instead.

How exactly can one use the webfeed generator to do this, and is it possible to add on the next version of artman a "publish for mobile device" button that publishes to /artmansdir/mobile/ a index file made up of a template like the "headlines_bycat.html" that could be customized, and have all the links target the printable version only. It woulld be the best add-on i can think of now. Eugenio Here to help! =================== Eugenio B. www.ecamty.net itools@ecamty.net ===================

Ok after working for several hours, I have come up with a simple idea for an avantgo or other palm friendly page: Publish a "headlines_bycat2" file (yes, there is a 2, its not an error.) This is basically the same as the headlines_bycat file, but instead of linking to the article page, it should link to the printer page. It does NOT include summaries, links or files. It includes at the bottom of the template a link to an "all articles with summary" page, called "summary_all", where those articles that are made out of summaries alone can be read, aswell as other articles with their respective summary. It is not hard to add in, just make artman publish 2 more files (with an option to do so- or even without, im sure 10k can be spared to publish these files) that are based on the ../templates/mobile/headlines.html and ../templates/mobile/summary.html templates. It would really help out a lot since palms dont like java and we cant modify the source code (I dont know how to anyway). I have tried by all means possible to publish a top headlines file and cant seem to be able to do this... so its either not possible without the program itself publishing it <<OR>> it was really late last night and my creativity was already asleep. If anyone knows a way to publish this top headlines file, PLEASE let me know. . Here to help! =================== Eugenio B. www.ecamty.net itools@ecamty.net ===================
