AM: Use of CSS within templates Can't Post

This is a feature request created by thread: "Accessibility, users cannot resize text". I think this would be of value by your technical and non-technical users.
  1. Convert the templates to a common css file.
  2. Make the css file to be definable system wide as a setup option. Can use a provided template file or one provided by the user.
  3. Provide the ability to define a css by category. Overides inheritance of global style sheet. Can use a provided template file or one provided by the user.
  4. Set up a control panel that allows modifying the css file. A html screen that had an examples of all the predefined font classes with drop down box with options to change the text format, size, bold, color, etc. Make the changes to be seen in real time. I picture a two column screen with the text choices on the left and resulting text on the right.
  5. Caveats that this only works with the standard template css files.
  6. Provide the ability to preview an article, home page, category page with the changes.
  7. Ability to save the file when completed.

I think this would help the non-technical user community have better control of the look and feel of their site.

This would also help out your advance users that want to take the standard css file and modify their site more extensively. I think I spent 5+ hours changing all my templates to go to single css style file. The conversion of inline styles to css file was pretty simple, but there were font definitions buried within the templates which took time to find.

This feature would help the non-technical and the technical user. I have spent time changing all the templates to be style agnostic and run the entire site with css. This included removing all the tables from the templates.

Re: [jcocking] AM: Use of CSS within templates [In reply to] Can't Post

I am working on some templates for a new site, andhave also removed all tables and made article manager CSS / DIV driven, and xhtml 1.0 strict. However, I have to say thi approach wouldnt work for the average user, because as soon as they plug in the rest of their template it will most likely break the code.

It might be an idea to release a set of templates that are standards compliant, and I fully intend to release mine when they are complete to help other users, but I think that the internet isnt ready for the switch yet until CSS can cope with advanced features the way tables can.

Just my opinion :)

I agree for the average user to keep the standard templates. Just convert it to a css file instead of the inline styles used today. Then provide a simple css editor so users can change the basic text attributes as part of the control panel. It would be a nice feature to integrate into the htmlArea product.. The key is any change must be able to support us crazy folk who build sites that rely on css for everything( page layout, text attributes, etc...).

p.s. I have one table left in my templates. It is in the header. The only other tables are used within articles to display tabular data. The rest is all done with <div>s. I have been working on the header, but have not been able to get it to look the way I want it yet.

Hi guys,

Standardizing the templates with CSS is a really good suggestion - I'm going to talk it over with our Product Manager in the next couple of days to see what he thinks. I'll keep you updated. :-)
