AM: Auto-update if field is added

I had about 50 stories published when I changed the format of one of my fields. And when I did and clicked the "Publish All" button, no stories showed up. I had to go in and manually update each story. 50 stories isn't bad, but I can imagine how long it would take if I had a few hundred or more... So, my suggestion is to add a way that the fields, if changed, are updated as well. Bryan Gilchrist

Hi elderban! I'm a little confused as to what happened here. Adding a field actually shouldn't make any changes to your articles at all. Your articles should only change when you go into the article and modify it directly. Essentially, making changes in the setup options won't modify the content of your articles in any way. Only modifying articles will change articles. Can you give me more details on what happened in your case? Donna

From your suggesting regarding changing the "Top Story" ard_field form a check box to a "Yes/No" pulldown, and changing the searches to reflect the change, the articles themselves didnt change, so the search was still seeing them all as the old method (with the checkbox) and was saying that there were "currently no articles". So I had to manually go in and re-save each article so it would reflect the "Yes/No" pulldown. Bryan Gilchrist

Hi Elderban, That's actually the expected behaviour. Essentially, regardless of what changes to the fields are made, no changes are made to the articles without direct interference. The method for making a mass change to every article like that would be by modifying the database directly -- say, by doing a search & replace on that field. I hope this helps. :) Donna

Hi Bryan, Thanks for the response . You'd want to manually go and resave each article, yes. Fortunately it's a one-time process so you won't have to worry about doing it again. If you have other questions please let me know. Cheers, Eric Lau - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com

My only concern was what if I had, say, 2,000 artiles. Manually changing them would be tedious. Bryan Gilchrist

Hi Bryan, Well, the general idea is to get this sort of thing out of the way BEFORE adding your articles... ;) Of course, this doesn't always happen. Therefore, the easiest thing to do is to modify the database directly. It's an advanced option, but it is a plain flatfile database so it's fairly simple to open it up in a text editor and do a few search & replace actions. I hope this helps. :) Donna
