$art_content_plain$ variable?

A feature that I could really use is something like an "art_content_plain$ that would output the text of an article in plain text (stripping out the HTML and replacing the spaces between paragraphs or <br /> tags with line returns). The reason is two-fold. First, we have website announcements that we use Article Manager for, but we also have mailing lists where some of the same announcements are also posted. If a feature like the one above existed, I could setup the mailing lists as "users" and when I post the announcement to the website, it could also be mailed to the mailing list. We could currently do this, but our mailing lists allow only plain text e-mail (i.e. no HTML). Secondly, we are also using AM to publish an RSS feed of our announcements. If there was the ability to output plain text articles, we could include the article text in the <description> tag. Again, we could do this now, but including HTML markup within a <description> tag goes against the standard, so we won't do it and it has the potential to cause problems with some news readers. Is there anyone else interested in this, and I would be interested in hearing from any of the excellent interactice tools staff on how easy/difficult this would be to implement.

Thanks for your post, Jason! I'll pass that along for future versions (although I think the next version of Article Manager is pretty set in stone...) however, here's one way you could do this with the software now: You could use one of the spare fields to input a "Text only" version of your article. It wouldn't be much more difficult than simply cutting & pasting the article into the second field. If you copy & paste it from the WYSIWYG editor or HTML field into a text field, it will drop the extra formatting and be the text-only version that you want. You could then specify this field to be used for the RSS feed, and your newsletter. Would this work for you? Let me know if that's a good solution for you. :) Donna

As always, thanks Donna! Your suggestion is a good one, and while I'm sure it would work, I guess I was looking for a simpler solution :) I was thinking that the actual parsing could be handled by a regex and it would be a simple change to implement. Obviously with the next version being the focus of your all's work, I think I'll wait and see what that offers. By the way, is there any publicly-available documentation of what the feature set for the next version will be?

Hi Jason, Thanks for the post! You can have a look over the Article Manager 2 thread here: http://www.interactivetools.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=43801#43801 There are a couple of flash videos you can take a look at and Theo has discussed specific features throughout that thread. If you have any other questions, just let me know! Cheers, Mike Briggs - Product Specialist support@interactivetools.com
