Issue #23 - April 2004 http://www.interactivetools.com/?nl info@interactivetools.com ************************************** In this issue: 1) How universetoday.com used Article Manager to turn a hobby site into a business 2) Tips and Tricks – Realty Manager tricks and scripts 3) Crazy Ranking on Google for Post-It Note Joke -------------------------------------------------- 1. HOW UNIVERSETODAY.COM USED Article Manager TO TURN A HOBBY SITE INTO A BUSINESS -------------------------------------------------- How do they do it? How do successful webmasters turn their hobby sites into money makers? Since this formula isn’t entirely clear, we turned to Fraser Cain, the previous marketing manager at interactivetools.com and webmaster of Universe Today for some answers. INTERACTIVETOOLS.COM: Hi Fraser. Could give us an idea of how you made ‘Universe Today’ into a profitable site? FRASER: When I was working at Communicate.com back in the mid to late 90’s (a web development company), I decided I needed to know more about the maintenance of content heavy websites so I could better educate our clients. Astronomy happened to be a subject I was interested in, so I built Universe Today to gain some practical experience. Once I started the site, I realized that I needed to develop a long term view for it to be sustainable and eventually profitable, so if I became busy with life, family or work, I could publish with a bare minimum of effort. Really, I was forced to take a hard look at how I published. I knew that if I was I ever going to make money at it, I’d better find a better, faster way to push content online, so I could do spend more time enhancing the site. CRAZY RANKING ON GOOGLE FOR POST-IT NOTE JOKE -------------------------------------------------- The Post-It note prank that had our office in stitches has achieved an absolutely nutty level of popularity. When Dave posted his joke on Damon, he expected a few laughs, but didn’t anticipate what would happen when the blog community picked it up. In fact, we've just been slashdotted!!! Slashdot.org has hundreds of posts on the Post-It Note joke. Goodness, you'd be amazed by how much people appreciate a good prank. Here are a few of our favorite posts plus the ground zero post that started these threads. Show me the prank!!!
