Problem-core files Can't Post
I have under the /exec folder, a bunch of files, called,

core.(and then a number), i.e., core.5662

These files say they are anywhere from 65 meg to .19 gig!

My website is full (2000 meg site), and I can't even get into the admin to delete or archive articles.

Are these files required or can I delete some of them?

Hi Amber,

Thanks for the post!

The core. files that you are speaking about are not Article Manager related files, so from an Article Manager standpoint you are safe to delete them.

One thing that you may wan to do is check with your web host these files could be related to your server set-up in some way.

Hi Chet - thanks for the response. Okay - I deleted those files - the wierd thing is, they were specifically located in the /cgi-bin/articles/exec/ folder, and only dated June 1 (two files) and the rest August 14th.

I deleted them...

But I still can't get in. I've freed up the server space (a huge 1400 meg freed up from those deletions), and now I can get past the admin, but when I try to log in, it says internal server error.

What's totally strange: I've used it on the dime-co.com site for a couple of years - but just changed my licence over to thevortal.com as I'm moving the site. I was away for most of July (and moved at the end of June), so I was just logging in to continue moving some files over so I can finalize making TheVortal's article system live. But I can't log in at dime-co (I CAN log in at thevortal). And I WAS able to log into dime's article admin just about 2 weeks ago (I did a check when in Florida on vacation).

Ideas on why the internal server error?

Yes, my server guy upgraded the apache server on Monday.

Hi Chet - I just submitted a support request. It's wierd - my server guy yesterday changed a permission and said it worked... but when I loaded the admin today - its trying to reinstall!

EEK - that would mean I'll lose like 3000+ articles/submissions that I want to move over to the new site.

Anyway - I submitted a request. Thanks!

Hi Chet - I replied :) Oh - and we did get "some" of them moved over (the live ones) to thevortal - but none of the pending submissions (and that's where there were a huge amount)

Urgh. I'm still so frustrated - this isn't working.

Only 285 articles are supposedly sitting in my article.dat file at dime-co.com, but yet there *were* a lot more than that until this issue messed up.

I know I set it to move over to thevortal.com, but I *need* access to the admin panel at dime-co to finish the move over, otherwise I'm almost starting from scratch for this move (VERY frustrating - no time for this as you can see by the delay in response LOL)

When I go to my admin panel at dime-co.com, its *still* asking me to complete first time set up!! This should NOT be appearing since I'm just trying to log in and move stuff. (This was never there before, just since August).

Strangely, when you go to http://www.dime-co.com, you *CAN* see the articles showing up on the site, you *CAN* view them all, and the article syndicator works.

But, the problem is, I cannot log in to access *anything*.

Help??

If I completed the setup again, would it wipe out my previous settings and articles?

Otherwise, how do I go about fixing this? I'd considered just buying a second licence of this software so that I can just run it at both sites, but its kind of a pain to make that decision when I can't even get one to work to move everything over, to decide if I need to bother or not.

Even if I chose to keep it just at dime-co, basically my thousands of articles are almost screwed up right now... which won't help search engine rankings in time.

Hi Amber,

I'm not 100% familiar with what's going on here, and Chet's not in the office on Mondays...

...however, going through the install process does not wipe out the saved articles. It doesn't affect the article database at all.

Also, this can usually be fixed by simply re-uploading your backed up setup.dat.cgi file. Try that and let me know how it goes for you. :)

Hi,

Wondering if this issue had resolution because I'm experiencing the exact same thing with listing manager. Huge files titled "core 1234" are being created with the "1234" being different numbers with each file. They're showing up in the same place as the other person said - in the exec folder within listman. It's causing my hosting account to fill up and shut down. I've been using listman with this hosting company for two years and never seen this before.

Hi there,

Getting core files in your exec directory means that your web server is doing something very, very wrong -- neither Listings Manager or Article Manager should be able to cause this, with a properly configured server. What those files generally are is a dump of what was in the memory when your server ran into a major error.

You can delete those files, although they may be able to help your hosting provider track down what the problem is. Alternately, you can fill in a support request and we can pop in and see if we can see what's going on:

I am having the same problem. I run hundreds of websites from my server and on the websites with LM installed are the ONLY ones that have core file spontaneously appear. When I delete them the are back within a few minuets and will grow to the size of whatever I set the file size cap to. I tested this out one site and the core file grew to over 500 mgs.

Thanks Donna, I updated my pearl Module in cpanel and now imagick is recognized by LM. The core files have now ceased and were being caused by exec/admin.cgi failing to find image magic and the result was a core file dump.
