I'm sure you've heard this all before but how do templates work?

I have just installed and have taken a template - default.htm and edited it. I then saved it as defaulttest.htm and put it back into the directory it came from - 'article' directory and have 'published all' - but how do I see it? or have I edited the wrong template - I want to create a new article input page ? I am totally clueless at the moment - a copy of the page I have edited can be found at http://www.curzoncinemas.com/defaulttest.htm - oh yes I#ve edited the article/default.htm, index/default.htm,the search.htm files and published - still shows the good old defaults?

its ok - its sorted - silly me edited my 'copy template' fies by mistake!
