Just a thought Dave, but since G Forum has so many options for the user account during setup are there any special requirements for GoForum in the G Forum user setup? Such as:
After posting action
Use advanced editor

Will these setting have an adverse effect on GoForum as it logs in as a user before posting to a forum?

Thanks!

Brian

With gforum make sure you have 'After posting' set to 'return directly to post' under 'Edit Profile' -> 'Display Settings'. However, if you don't goforum.cgi should give you a friendly message letting you know you need to change that.

Perfect!

Works like a dream!

Is it possible to create the same kind of links from an article as well as the category page?

Would all we need to do be to add the code below to the article template?
- [ <a href="/artman/exec/goforum.cgi?id=$art_num$">Discuss this story</a> ]

Special Note to ALL Gossamer Forum users........
Dave is going to have a release that incorporates a couple fixes posted Manday. YOU WILL LOVE IT!Cool

Yes!

You can just add the code above and add it to your detailed article page as well.

This is VERY cool!

Thanks IT!!!

I don't think so. Currently supported bulletin boards are: vbulletin, gossamer forum, ubbthreads, ikonboard, ubbclassic 5.x+.

ok, what if I want to use the member's specific username, instead of the same username and password? In my case I use vbulletin and I'd like for the member already logged to post with his own username.

As it is now, that's not supported. The thread actually doesn't get created until the first time someone clicks on the "discuss this article" link, not right when the author creates the article.

It would be possible, with Perl, to check the owner of the article and then use a different username and password to create the thread based on who created the article, but it would be a fair bit of work and you'd have to either enter all the user account info into the script or have some other way to look it up.

You'd need some more perl code to parse that out and replace it with the actual image, unfortunately.

hi,

i understand that for you folks there seems to be no more fun than to tweak around with php, perl etc., but to be honest, i'm more focused on using this stuff than programming itUnsure!

so will we see this (and other) features built-in ready-to-use in one of the next releases?

i would also be interested in having the headlines of the last 3-5 threads in the automatically created forum of the respective article under the article.

possible?

     Re: [Dave] Discuss this Article Add-On - Problems! [In reply to]

Dave,

A couple of days ago, I was telling people that this was an excellent feature. Sadly now, I have to say the opposite.

Why? - Because simply it is so easy to abuse the feature - I have just had to remove some 50 odd posts, because someone, decided that it would be fun to go through a load of news stories and click on the button 'Discuss this story in the forums'. Whether he will go through the other 300 odd articles is anyones guess.

Now - whilst I can remove the link from the dat file, the person will only repeat his stunt. If I leave the dat file in place then, we just get an error - and a genuine poster is disadvantaged.

So I am left with little choice but to remove this feature. Unsure especially as I have no way of tracking the person - the only IP recorded is that of the server, as it is that 'person' making the post rather than the user.

Dave - I am not sure if this can be improved at all, but we need to have some method of controlling idiots, who have nothing better to do than to abuse forums.

Sorry for the moan.....

We can do something to fix it up. The issue is since these are free add-on scripts we haven't allocated a lot of time to make improvements, we were hoping that they'd serve as an example for people who wanted to take things further on their own.

In any case, what would you like to happen when the user clicks on a link that's older than N days?

Here's a "beta" of a new version with a "maxAge" setting that won't create threads for articles older than N days. By default it's set to a max of 7 days. Give it a try and let us know any feedback you have.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the prompt reply as usual Cool (why can't this forum covert :) into a Smile) sorry I digress!

I think the best and simplest option would be for 'N' to be able to be set easily in the script, and for all other posts to go straight to the forum, bypassing the creating of a new post - that way the person can login (if required) and still post his or her comments - and so everyone is happy :)

Of course don't forget this bypassing should be easy to adapt for those people who have added the ability to go to a certain forum depending upon the category :)

Hi canvey

I felt the same way .. but i really anticpated this and i am fne with it since benifits outweigh drawbacks. Its not really a bad thing .. its just frustrating ..<laughs>
I know that am eventually gonna end up with an AM duplicate Frown ... but a link can only be clicked on and entered into board once .. so we are sparing the next user the wait for thread to be created. <trying HARD to feel positive>

Setting a Max date is a good idea .. but it won't stop ppl from clicking the link and not commenting .. and down the road we will be in the same situation.

BTW, Is it possible to use a seperate template for archived articles? (one w/o Disuss this story).

what if we provide the visitors with a textarea where they can write thier comments (think popup) and when they click submit (if comments field is not empty) the article is auto inserted along with thier comments underneath it in the same post?
think that would scare the cowards a bit and encourage the serious ones to write?

Dave .. thanks for the prompt response .. thanks for the update .. thanks for everything.

Add \n at the end of the error message, right before the double quote. Perl doesn't print out that extra info when error messages end in \n (which is a nextline or enter key).

Dave - any chance of adding support for invisionboard forums? I notice you have added support for ikonboard - and that is pretty much an older version of ibf. I have a huge site I want to add your Article Manager to using invision board. Thanks. George

Hi,

I have been trying to change the code so that it will automatically foward to the correct forum in the event that the number of max days has been met, but cannot seem to get it quite right.

I wondered if someone might be able to assist.

Thanks.

If you want it to forward to different forums based on the article category, that's a a little trickier. If it's just one forum something like this should do:

print "Location: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/forum.cgi\n\n";
exit;

Otherwise you'll need to do something like this:

if ($rec{'cat'} == 1) { print "Location: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/forum.cgi?category=plains\n\n"; }
elsif ($rec{'cat'} == 2) { print "Location: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/forum.cgi?category=trains\n\n"; }
elsif ($rec{'cat'} == 3) { print "Location: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/forum.cgi?category=automobiles\n\n"; }
else { print "Location: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/forum.cgi?category=default\n\n"; }
exit;

what do you say-is it worth supporting it?
