Installation Trouble - No Install Page Can't Post
I'm trying to install PP for the first time. I've followed the directions and uploaded all the files, but when I point my browser to the /pp/pp.cgi the browser (Firefox) just wants to download it. I tried Internet Explorer and it just showed all the code in the doc...nothing useable to install PP. I'm in a bit of a time crunch, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Rach.

Thanks for posting and welcome to the board!

When you are seeing source code or being prompted to download the cgi scripts, it usually has to do with the way CGI is configured on your web server. I suggest getting in touch with your web host and show them the link to your pp.cgi script and ask them to double check how CGI is installed.

Ross,
Thanks for you reply. So, what exactly should I be asking? My client has their own server, but the server tech is pretty tough to get a hold of, so I want to be as detailed as possible.

Do they most likely not have CGI installed properly or does it just need to be configured differently in order to work with PP? If so, what are those specifications? I've not installed PP before, nor do I have much experience with CGI, so I'd appreciate any details you can provide. Thanks.

Hi Rach,

Thanks for posting, I also got your email.

Page Publisher will just need a standard installation of Perl to run, and I've included some test "hello world" scripts for you

These scripts check to see that Perl is installed properly and should just output the words "Hello World" when run through a web browser. Like this:

http://www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/pp/hello.cgi
http://www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/pp/hello.pl

If you get your server administrator to see they could get these test scripts to run and leave them running, you could then use them as a reference point and continue with the installation.

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for the email update.

If the hello.pl script works, then all you need to do is change the file extension of your pp.cgi file to pp.pl. When Perl is setup on the server, it's usually set up to run under either .cgi, .pl or both. In your case, it's .pl Smile

So you should be able to just change that file, and run the installation. If you run into any more troubles, just let me know. I'm here to help Cool

Cliff,
I changed the /cgi-bin/pp/pp.cgi file to /cgi-bin/pp/pp.pl and it looked like it was about to install, a couple of graphics loaded, but I got this error:
Error : filelock error opening exclusive file lock C:/Inetpub/mysite/Mlt-Web/cgi-bin/pp/data/filelock.lock: Permission denied

Any ideas as to what the problem is? I'm sorry I'm quite ignorant about Perl, CGI and Windows servers...all the specs of this project. :/

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for the update.

Looks like there is a permissions problem on your server that is preventing the script from installing properly. Normally, Perl scripts run with no need to set any permissions on Windows Servers. However, in some instances, the server might not be setup to allow the Perl CGI scripts to have "Write Access" to their files. If this is the case than the program will display a message indicating that it is unable to write to it's data files.

In order for Page Publisher to properly function, it needs to be able to rename a file by overwriting an existing file that already has that same name. You'll want to contact your hosting provider and make sure rename permissions are set to the /cgi-bin/pp/ directory and all subdirectories. These permissions must be set to the user that Perl is running as. This is generally IUSR_Servername (Where Servername is the name of your server).

Once you get these permissions set, the installation script will run just fine and you should have no trouble finishing the installation of Page Publisher. Smile
