Installation Issues Can't Post
Well I finally purchased the product a couple of days ago for use by my teachers at our school. I am now trying to install it. I was going to let you guys do it but our school district does not allow outside ftp access to our servers. I think I have everything where it should be but when I try to access pp.cgi to run the setup I get a "This page cannot be found" error. We are running a Windows server and Explorer 6.0. Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Hi there,

This is generally caused by one of two situations: One, it could be just as it says -- that might not be where the file is located. Double check that the directory you've uploaded the software to is the same one you're accessing online. I usually test it by sticking a simple test.html file online and seeing if that shows up.

If it does, then the problem is with running CGI scripts on your server. One thing to try is to rename the pp.cgi to pp.pl -- your server may be setup to only allow .pl files to run. If that doesn't work, you'll want to check with your server admin to see if they can verify that Perl is running correctly. We have a simple test script (I've attached it to this post) that we use to test servers -- when working properly, you should see the words "hello world". Once you've got that working, Page Publisher should have no problem. :)

Thanks for the help. I am very excited about the prospects of getting this to work and actually having my people use it.

The hello.cgi file returns the same error but changing the pp.cgi name to pp.pl gets me a little further along. I now get the Page Publisher startup window with an error in it. "Error : Undefined subroutine &main::sq called at c:\inetpub\wwwroot\schools\cms\pp\pp.pl line 105." So what is this telling me? If you can guide me along then I can pass along the info to our network guy.

Hi there,

We've come across that error a few times in the past, and what it usually indicates is that the script was uploaded incorrectly, or got corrupted somewhere along the way. Try re-uploading it, and make sure that it's being transferred in ASCII, not binary.

Nope. I even downloaded it a second time from your server and tried that. I'm still getting the same exact error. By the way when I change the name of hello.cgi to hello.pl it works fine.


I ran another script called server.cgi that is supposed to give me some info on the server. It would not run at first but after changing the extension to .pl it returned the following error message.A CGI ERROR HAS OCCURRED========================Error Message : The getpwuid function is unimplemented at
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\schools\cms\pp\server.pl line 167.Any idea what that means?

Well after more research it turns out that these two errors may not be related at all so i guess you can disregard the last part of my previous post. I am so confused.Crazy I sure hope we can make this work. This is a Win NT server but I'm not sure which version of perl it is running.

Hi there.

First off, I just want to thank you for your patience as we work through all the different options here. It’s obviously a little trickier for us to test things out without having access to your server, but I am sure we are going to get this sorted out together Smile.

The next thing I am thinking is that this could be is a permissions problem. Could you double check that your data and uploads folder have world read/write permissions for the user that Perl is running as on the server? I have a test script I can send you that will highlight the permissions a little better. If you wanted to check it out, just email me at support@interactivetools.com

I have emailed you several times over the past couple of days and am not getting a reply from you guys so I'll try this approach.

This is what I have done so far:

My WAN manager assures me that the file and directory permissions are correct but I am still getting the following error: Error : Undefined subroutine &main::sq called at c:\inetpub\wwwroot\schools\cms\pp\pp.pl line 105.

Now comes the important part. I started thinking that maybe I should start all over so I downloaded PP again at home and brought is to work on a cd (on the outside chance that our firewall was screwing it up on the download - it's been known to happen). I created an entirely new directory on our web server and installed PP there. With this install I am now getting an entirely different error when I try to run pp.cgi. First, remember that I have to change pp.cgi to pp.pl to get it to run. The error I am now getting is: "Error : filelock error opening exclusive file lock c:/inetpub/wwwroot/schools/cms/teacherpages/pp/data/filelock.lock: Permission denied"

What do you think? The odd thing is that I still have the orginal install over in another directory and it is still giving me the old "Error : Undefined subroutine &main::sq called at c:\inetpub\wwwroot\schools\cms\pp\pp.pl line 105" error.

Does the fact that I have to change the extension on any cgi script I run from .cgi to .pl in order to make it work have anything to do with the problems?

If we can get this new install to work then I will delete the first one. I would gladly let you guys ftp in and take care of it if I could but I can't get the powers that be to allow outside ftp access to the web server. Heck, they won't even give it to me. If I have to update our website I have to come to work so that I am behind the firewall before I can do things. Can you say paraniod? Mad
