Parse error Can't Post
Hello,

I have been using News Manager on my clients' sites for many years, and I really like its simplicity. I just upgraded my hosting account and had to move all of my files to a new server. While I was changing the settings I noticed that an upgrade was available and implemented it.

Now, when I go to the index page or article pages, i get the following error:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected ':' in /home/domain/news/index.html on line 27

I also noticed that if i remove the $summary$ tags from the templates, the problem goes away (as does the summary content).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like there is something in the summary of one of your news articles that your new server isn't able to recognize. One likely scenario is if some content has been copied into News Manager from Microsoft Word. Sometimes Word will add content that your server will be unable to recognize and will cause a Parse error.

The easiest way to get rid of this is to copy your text into Notepad (this should remove all formatting and extra Microsoft Word code) and then copy it back into News Manager. Once it's in News Manager you can use the WYSIWYG editor to change fonts, colors, and any other formatting change you were looking to do.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the timely response. I have changed the code and the pages are now loading properly.

Since my client uses MSWord to create articles, are there any settings in the admin section to change how News Manager saves these pages?

Or, can what should I request a change from my new hosting company that would enable the pages to parse properly with the MSWord tags in place?

Hi palmatec.

Thanks for the update!

There really isn’t much that could be done on your webserver to change the way News Manager handles text from word but Mike’s suggestion of copying everything to a notepad first and then to News Manager works great!

One thing you could try as well is turning off the automatic spell checking in word as I think this could be causing some of the formatting problems you were running into. I have seen similar situations where the little red underlines for misspelled words were done using some rather unique xml tags.

Could you give that a shot and see if it eliminates the problem.

Just keep us up to date on how you are making out with this Smile.

After further investigation with my hosting tech support staff, we found a work-around that seems to do the trick.

The xml code is embedded into their html, so they will need to use SSI (Server-Side Includes). To do this, in the News Manager setup menu, i changed the filename extention from .html to .shtml and re-published all the pages and it seems to work.

I'm glad to hear that you've been able to set this up so you're no longer running into these errors when your client is pasting their content in from Microsoft Word. Hopefully this post will help anyone else who comes across this same problem on their site.
