Job Manager - Adding Jobs directly to file?

Job Manager - Adding Jobs directly to file? Can't Post
We have been running a number of tests everything is fine, that's the good news!

The client this is for supplies details of jobs to a third party, who update a number of commercial job boards with the job details. Not surprisingly he would like them to update Job Manager as well, as this is used on his website.

They are (the third party) and I quote "For an automatic posting engine like ours to be integrated. The two steps needs to be combined into a single step, so that when we post, it will automatically authenticate and add the job".

Would it be possible for them to update the main job.dat file or would be there be some other alternative method.

I have tried adding jobs to the job.dat file directly and that seems to work ok, but the only problem I get is that they get set to "not displayed" presumably I am not updating a field correctly.

Any advice would be gratefully received

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the forum post Smile.

While editing job.dat is beyond normal use and it's unsupported, what I can tell you is that if you edit job.dat directly, Job Manager doesn't know that data's been changed and that it needs to republish the new content. What you need to do essentially is to force Job Manager to republish every so often. To do this, you need to set up the web server so the following URL gets executed periodically:

http://path/to/admin.cgi?login=1&id=jm&pw=welcome&publish_all=Publish%20All

Change the /path/to to the actual web path to admin.cgi, change your id and pw values to use an account that has administrative privileges, and that should do it. Sly

Thanks for the prompt reply.Smile

I understand why the actions are unsupported (I was on your side of the fence many years!)

Looking at the file it's fairly easy to see which field is which though some are not so obvious, but have you a definitive file layout or breakdown of the fields on the file?

Will the re publish code cure the problem of the records being added with a category of "not displayed" or am I failing to assign it correctly when creating the record?

Whiel I don't have such a file layout, the best advice I have is to create several new Jobs in Job Manager, each one in a different category, to see how category is managed in Job Manager. Note that to figure out a category's number, you can simply go to Category Editor and move your mouse over a category's modify link. The last number in the link's URL is the category number.

It won't cure the problem you stated, but republishing periodically is necessary otherwise you can add many jobs this way and the webpages won't update. Republishing is necessary before you see changes in the publish pages.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply.

I have discussed this with my client. We have decided not to go down this route. As a third party would be updating this information and we are not sure about the quality of the information they will be supplying. As we are using Job Manager on his web site we need to make sure what is displayed is correct.

One further question (there always is!) Is there any way of displaying the 'job id' as well on the first page of the screen where the admin screen where the jobs are maintained?

I don't believe there's a way to do this in Job Manager. We designed the Job Editor to display job title rather than job id because people usually recognize the job title than a job id number. The only workaround I can think of is adding the job id number somewhere in the job title.
