Changing Default base Filename and locations Can't Post
Now that I've had some time working with News Manager, it
appears the base filenames and locations are not suitable for my organizations needs.
Additionally, I erased a few news files, the default being
news_ , and now those numbers are not available. I want to
have different prefix other than news, like dept_ and also
want to have numbers dept_1.html , 2 and 3 etc available.
I'm afraid to start messing with changing filenames without
destroying the index of files. I still have news_1.html in directory but it will not show up in the listing of articles.

Can I go back and change news article to another name and be able to update that in the future? I'd like to avoid using the prefix altogether on a few pages. ShockedShocked

Hi

Thanks for posting and welcome to the board!

It is actually possible to change the news_ prefix to something else if you like. All you need to do is log into News Manager, go to the Setup Options and there will be a textbox labeled “Default base filename “. Once you change it, you’ll need to republish your articles. One thing to keep in mind though is that all the filenames will need to be the same so it’s either all dept_ or news_, etc.

In regards to the article numbers, these are set but News Manager itself and won’t be reused. If you create articles1 to 10 and then delete them, the next article will still be number 11. Once you have deleted a article from you list, you’ll need to re-create it again if you want it back in the system.

Thanks for the early reply. Your response solved my first question.
I did try recreating the lost articles news_1, news_2 etc
that I deleted. When I dropped them in the publish directory, I still only see the ones I created via the "create new article" on the list of articles and the ones available to
modification. I can't seem to recreate the old articles even if I just copy and rename the subsequent created articles.
Any suggestions? Mu users and I don't want to have articles starting with news_5 or dept_5.

Hi.

Thanks for the update!

In its news.dat file (in the data folder), News Manager keeps track of the last number used for an article. It’s the second line.

If you change this back to 0 and save, the next article you create will be dept_1.html.

Could you give this a shot and let me know how it works out?
