Was my site hacked? Can't Post

I have had my site removed from Google's index and recieved an email from them that says:

......This appears to be because your site has been modified by a third party. Typically, the offending party gains access to an insecure directory that has open permissions. Many times, they will upload files or modify existing ones, which then show up as spam in our index.

The following are some example URLs from your site:

http://xxxxxxxx/listman/listings/images/6600-sis-rm.html
http://xxxxxxxxx/listman/listings/images/9429.html
http://xxxxxxxxx/listman/listings/l0014.html

Apon closer inspection the page had been added with crap - links to other sites - paragraphs of rubbish ect ect.

I spoke with my hosying company (ixwebhosting) and they claim never to have been hacked, and suggested it was either via ftp access, or a script. The offending pages all point to listman/listings , so could the idiots have gained access via the script? Is there anything off the top of your heads that i can do /should check to prevent this from happening again?

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Drop me a support request here:

https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi

If possible, we'd like to take a look at your site directly.

As far as we know, nobody's ever hacked into a site via Listings Manager, but that's something we take pretty seriously, so we'd be happy to see what's going on.

Just to let you know, the location of the malicious changes doesn't necessarily mean much. I once had someone gain access to my site via an insecure script on an entirely different domain (but linked to the same account, so once they were in, they uploaded a nasty little script that gave them full access to my whole account, and therefore all of my domains) make all sorts of wonderful changes to my main site. Argh. While I'm not sure why they decided to go after my main site, I suspect it had to do with my rather good google rating... darn it! On the upside, that allowed me to notice it much faster. Phew. :)

Anyway, drop us an email, we'll see if we can help you track this down.

Donna
