Sorting auto listings to put newest listing on top Can't Post

I've looked through other posts on here and I see others asking similar questions, but I'm still confused.

Here is the page I'm trying to work with: http://www.commandfireapparatus.com/apparatus/listings/

Right now the first listing is the oldest. I need to reverse that. I see in other posts that there is a sort order option that uses "-11,123,reverse" but I have not figured out yet how or where to place this code to make it work.

I created this page over two years ago and now my memory of how it all works is a little fuzzy. Please help!

Hi there,

To change the sorting, you would need to use the search engine instead. So, you'd have something like this:

http://www.commandfireapparatus.com/apparatus/exec/search.cgi?search=1&sort_order=-11,123,reverse

I hope this helps. :)

Hi Donna,

Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately, I still have no idea how to make this happen. Here are some points to clarify what we're trying to do on this site.

If you look here: http://www.commandfireapparatus.com/apparatus/listings/ you will notice that the trucks are listed in order of the year they were manufactured starting with the oldest one and ending with the newest of 2005. I'm not sure how we accomplished that in the first place, but we want to reverse that order. The 2005 truck should be at the top of the list. This sort has nothing to do with when the trucks were entered into the database so we are not looking to sort by newest added to the web site. The sort should be solely based on the year of the vehicle which I believe is entered in LFIELD2.

I see in the admin panel under "setup listings fields" a note that says "The top field is used to list and sort your entries in the Listing Editor index. " If that is the case then the sort is being controlled by the field LFIELD1 which is the name of the truck. That's fine as well, but I still do not see a way to reverse the order.

I've worked with your software in the past and it is always logical to use. This issue, however, has stumped me. It seems like there should just be a check box to sort by a particular database field ascending or descending.

Is it possible we need to upgrade the software to make this happen? We're currently running V.2.52.

Thank again!

Hi Tony,

Basically, to change the sort order, you need to use the Search Engine instead of the static listing page. So, you won't be using this page anymore:

http://www.commandfireapparatus.com/apparatus/listings/

...you'd be using this instead:

http://www.commandfireapparatus.com/apparatus/exec/search.cgi?search=1&sort_order=-11,123,reverse

The sort order can be altered via this URL -- for example, if you want to sort on lfield2, you would do this:

http://www.commandfireapparatus.com/apparatus/exec/search.cgi?search=1&sort_order=2,123,reverse

This will sort on listing field 2, from highest to lowest number.

I hope this helps. :)
