Sort Listings by Listee Priority Can't Post

Hi Everyone!
There may be a couple of solutions to this problem - I'll take any of them!
My customer lists timeshare properties owned by a variety of customers. These customers list their own properties and each has their own homepage.
She wants to assign a 'priority' hfield to each customer. In this case, hfield6 is defined as priority A, B or C.
Naturally, her customers shouldn't be able to re-modify their priority themselves, so I have disabled her customer's ability to modify their homepage entirely (don't knock it, it does the job!)
What I want to do now is apply a listings search based upon this new hfield$ field.
I am aware that a search mixing hfield$ and lfield$ is not yet possible with Listings Manager, but can I merely display Listings (NOT, I repeat, NOT homepages) in hfield6 priority order?
e.g. say hfield6 is defined as priority A, B, or C - how can I show the As listings first, Bs listings next and the Cs listings last?
As an encore, can these be subdivided by lfield? Again, I know that we can't mix lfield and hfield in a search, but is there a script which lets you sift and select by an lfield, then subsequently sorts those results by hfield?
Furthermore, thanks to your forums info I know about search_homepage.cgi and have made it work for sorting through homepages. But that is NOT what I want to do here - I want LISTINGS sorted by the priority assigned to the listee.
I hope you can help, even if it is only to tell me it is impossible! (If it IS impossible, I have a different strategy based upon selective display of backend items which I'll need help on, but that's for another time..!)
Thanks a million,
John

Re: [johnshiel] Sort Listings by Listee Priority [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi John,

Thanks for your post!

Unfortunately the kind of sorting you've described isn't possible. While you could create a "priority" field for the listings side and sort by that, there's no way to create the same field for your homepages and use that as a sort option for the listings.

Let us know if you need some help with your alternate approach and we can take a look for you. Smile

Re: [Jake] Sort Listings by Listee Priority [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Jake.
I thought as much!
OK, then the other option is to do just as your describe (i.e. to make it an 'lfield', not an 'hfield'), but with a difference - make it selectively 'hide' this 'priority function' in the interface so that a 'Regular User' can't access it.
This would be in much the same way as 'Setup Options' and 'User Manager' selectively appears to Administrators only, but this time it happens to be a standard 'lfield' function.
In this way, an administrator could modify individual item priorities and a sort function would be as any other.
How about that then?

Hi there,

Yes, although it would require some changes to the interface templates. Note that we can't support interface template modifications, but you're welcome to give it a try! Take a look at this tutorial for more details:

I hope this helps. :)

Thanks Donna!

This is now very close to what I need and the tutorial was very clearly written too.

The only extra thing I'd like is for this 'Featured Listings' option to be accessible to Administrators in addition to SuperUsers (but not Regular Users, of course).

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

John

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply!

I've attached an interface file to this post which will give this functionality to administrators in addition to superusers on your site. Just upload this into your Listings Manager /templates/interface directory and everything should be good to go for you. Smile

Well done Jake, that did it!

What I did was present the list in reverse order of this field, so the bigger the number, the higher up the list a listing goes.

My customer now has full control of the listings, and her customers can't change that!

Marvellous!

Thanks again!

John

Re: [Jake] Sort Listings by Listee Priority [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jake,

in respect of the tutorial related to this it is mentioned that any text box needs to be changed to wysiwyg, how important is this as we have a number of text boxes relating to establishment name address etc and as individual clients are responsible for inputting all their information we dont want to give them the ability to customise fonts sizes, colours etc in these fields however we would like to be able to apply a priority code to them which cannot be altered by the regular user, can this be done without converting all the text fields to wysiwyg.

Thanks in advance

Re: [willydoit] Sort Listings by Listee Priority [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there,

The way this tutorial works is that it locks out a specific "type" of field for use only for the superuser. So, all WYSIWYG fields would be superuser only.

However, you could definitely switch this and make it so another type of field was used for this -- just be aware that whatever type you choose will not be available for non-superusers.
