Multiple User Guides Can't Post
Hi,

I was unclear after reading the spec and using the demo if DocBuilder allowed you to create multiple, separate user guides? I have several different areas of my site that I would like to use DocBuilder for, including both development staff areas, and public areas. I *think* this is what the "publish to different directories" is for, but I just want to check.

This opens up another question - can I restrict peoples access to update documents based on categories? I wouldnt want a contributor of one area to be able to undo all the work of another area!

Finally, I know you are adding htmlArea to this (and I hope an image upload script) - I just wanted to add my support for that!

DocBuilder can be used for multiple, separate user guides.

I'm not sure about restricting access to categories. One can specify whether a user is an 'Administrator' or a 'Regular User' but, as far as I know, it doesn't stretch beyond that. I guess what you could do is protect the publish directory in some way, restricting its access as necessary.

You're exactly right, with DocBuilder you can publish different document groups/categories to different directories on the website. Unfortunately there's no way to restrict what document groups/categories users can create documents in.

I like this idea though, it makes sense and is a good one. In fact it's already on our list of feature requests. As always, with any feature request I won't be able to say if it'll be added for sure, but I will make a note of it and pass it on to our developers. :)

You might want to look to Article Manager for this functionality. With Article Manager you already get the WYSIWYG editor, image uploading, and the ability to create several categories. Also, users can be restricted to have only access to create articles in specified categories.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Luke - I already have Article Manager, and have been happily running it on my site for some time. This is why I want to buy another IT product, as they are a pleasure to work with!

It would be great if the administrator could set up a "team leader" for each category, who can edit all documents within a category, and also set up writers, who can only create and edit their own pieces.

Anyways - off to purchase - see you later!

hi there

just started to use docbuilder and was wondering whether it is possible to create multiple document groups each with, for example, a different color scheme or templates.

i have an application where i need to create several different document groups but each needs to look graphically different to fit target website.

am i missing something stupid?

Hi Graham,

Welcome to the forums. :)

You're right -- DocBuilder uses the same templates when creating any group of documents.

What you can do is create different sets of templates, and when you're modifying them online, just copy the set for the ones that you're modifying into the templates directory and DocBuilder will use the correct templates when it generates the documents. :)
