slight goofup... easy way to fix this?

I had all my publishing rules turned off so that it wouldn't publish instantly (and take forever) every time we approved an article. (I get hundreds daily).
however... rebuilding the site obviously takes days to do it the "publish all" way now that we have 40,000 articles.
Unfortunately I goofed and we forgot to turn the publishing rules back on, before approving more new articles. 
And obviously... rebuilding again is taking too much time. (Yes, I've broken it down by section, but it's still taking forever).
If I was to turn the publish rules back on "now"... and then approve an article, will it properly publish all that haven't been done? Or will they still stay not published?
