'externalLink' value exceeds maximum field size Small Hitch Can't Post

got bout 4-5k articles, switched to sql, everythings in place.

Can't get thru transfer of articles due to 'externalLink' value exceeds maximum field size of 255

Sounds like some of my outside links exceed 255 characters. How and where do I go to adjust that field size to allow publishing to continue?

Thanks

Hi Floodrod,

It's right here:

Admin > Database Editor > Articles Table > externalLink > Stored As

And change that from 'string' to 'memo'.

Hope that helps, let me know if I can provide more details for you or you need anything else.

'externalLink' changed to stored as memo but reverts back [In reply to] Can't Post

Reviving this old thread because I am having the same problem, and while I tried the suggested fix (changing the "stored as" option to memo), for some reason the database option reverts from memo back to string, so I can't get the upgrade script to complete because it'll encounter a 255+ string and throw an error.

I thought permissions might be the culprit, so I went back over everything and as far as the files and folders specified, they are as specified in the setup documentation.

*Something* is causing the field to revert to a 255 string in the AM CMS as well as the SQL database.

Two questions:
What else can I look at?
Assuming I can get the memo field type to 'stick', is there any problem leaving it that way? This client often needs to use the field for some very long URLs and as rapidly as they need to put out numerous articles early every morning they can't realistically be expected to use a URL shortener.

Please help. Frown

Thanks, Donna. Will head over & fill out the support request.

After more troubleshooting I can say that the 'stored as' type is definitely reset after I run the upgrade script.

I think I got it. This is probably undocumented or not recommended, but it worked. Please tell me if it's dangerous Sly

I searched the AM interface files and scripts for references to the externalLink field. One I found in a file called From141.pm seemed to set the data's stored as type to string. So I changed it to memo there, then ran the upgrade script. Voila - it ran, completed & gave me the congratulations message. All ~35K articles appear to have been transferred.

So, is there a possibility that the edit I made would cause problems elsewhere?

Hi there,

Glad to hear that worked for you!

That should probably be fine -- that file *should* only be used during the upgrade. As always, keep a backup, but I think you'll be good to go. :)
