article manager and drop down menu Can't Post

I am updating my page and really want to have the category menu at the top if the page with a drop down menu for sub categories.

what I have done so far is create a drop down menu in my siteHeader.html using spry widgets (as I do not know much about javascript I thought this was the best way)

Now I have no way of working out how to get article manager driving these categories - I really would prefer not to have to hard code it all as I would prefer to have it done using the article manager system.

I have done a shell of the site here - what I basically need to work out is how to get the category menu currently sitting on the left fill the drop down menu at the top.

I have searched through the forums but cannot work out how to do this at all.

any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Margaret!

Take a look at this tutorial that Chet wrote:

http://www.interactivetools.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=55829#55829

It's for a slightly different style of menu, but it should be adaptable for the code that you're using instead. The hard part is getting the nesting <ul> tags in there, but Chet's tutorial shows you how to use the global order & category level to setup templateIf's to make that work.

Give that a try and let me know how it goes. :)

Thanks Donna

for the time being I have decided to hard code my horizontal navigational bar (until I can get my head around it) but in the meantime I am trying to get the side bars working so visitors can see where they are within the category.

I nearly have what I want

at the moment when you click on a category you get

CATEGORY NAME IN BOX
then listed below that you get
CATEGORY NAME
sub category
sub category
etc etc

see

http://www.nswtwu.org/industries/index.shtml

what I would like is

CATEGORY NAME (in box)
SUB CATEGORY
SUB CATEGORY
etc etc

Then when you click on the sub category I would like the CATEGORY NAME to stay in the yellow box with the sub cats listed

I guess like a minis site map but just for the category currently being visited (does that make sense?)

I am not sure whether I have to change the publish rule or the html file???

many thanks

Re: [margaretmh] article manager and drop down menu [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there.

We are definitely getting into a fairly complex menu system but I think it is still do-able. It might be something better suited for consulting though as working through it in the forums could take a while.

What kind of timeframe are you working on with this one? Of course, if we end up in consulting, "what sort of budget is there" would also be a question to ask.

Let me know if you are ok with working through it step by step on the forums or just email me through consulting@interactivetools.com and we can get consulting going.

Either way, we'll work with you every step of the way until it's done :).
