Substitute Images in AM2? Can't Post

I uploaded two images (embedded media) for an article. I need to substitute image1 with a different image, that is a different size.

Is there a way to do this? Or is my only option to delete the exisitng image and add another image as image3?

Thanks!

Hi Bill

Thanks for posting!

When you delete an image, it's placeholder isn't used again so if you delete image 1, the next image you upload will be image 2.

So basically, you'll need to change anywhere you're already using ***image1***, you'll need to change to ***image2***.

Keep me up to date with how you are making out. Thanks!

I text-edited db_article_dat.cgi. That substituted image1 with my new image instead of creating a new image3.

Actually, the issue I had wasn't that I needed a new image - it was that the image I originally uploaded was too big, and I needed to replace it with a smaller image. I simply ftp'ed the resized image into the proper directory.

When AM2 uploades an image, I see that AM2 stores the size of the image in the database. I needed to change the stored size of the image.

This is somewhat common and I wonder if other people here have the same issue? It would be nice to tell AM2 to resize the stored images for an article.

Hi Bill,

As Ross mentioned, the best method is going to be to delete the old image, then re-upload it and update the image placeholder in your article. While it's possible to edit the database directly, it's generally not recommended (for reasons like what you mentioned -- other values are saved that might not be immediately obvious.) Letting Article Manager do the work is a much better solution. :)

Donna, I have to completely disagree - deleting the old image is NOT the best method. I have a nice business process flow going, where the first image always represents a product portfolio, and the second image represents a competitive comparison. Going off-process makes what I'm doing non-standard. So, if I have to go back the article, I know exactly what I'm looking at. STANDARDIZATION.

The database is a text file that is easy to understand and very easy to edit.

I firmly believe in following a strict business process. Standardization breeds success.

Hi Bill,

That's no problem -- if you have such a strict workflow, I might recommend setting up separate upload fields for each one. So you'd have a product portfolio upload field, a competitive comparison upload field, etc. This will keep things even more strictly organized if your workflow demands it, and allows you to deviate a little and delete old photos if necessary without having to hit up the database directly.

That's a nice idea, Donna, I'm going to look into that.
