Finding Category Numbers Can't Post

Think I'm blind. I need to identify category numbers for some result filtering. Have dug through everything I can think of and cannot find. Categories are all set up as under publish using convention "cat_art_subject". Have looked through categories and admin section and can't find anywhere. Am sure you have a simple answer for me. BTW, I have some disabled categories, does that affect the numbering?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike!

There are two ways: One, is you can use a category placeholder to display the category number on the category index itself. But this is a little overkill, so here's my sneaky way of figuring it out:

Go into the Category editor, and click the "Modify" button for the category you need the number of. Now, look in the address bar. It should end with something like this:

admin.cgi?action=categoryEdit&num=12

That number on the end is your category number. In this case, it's category #12. :)

I hope this helps!

Donna

Re: [Donna] Finding Category Numbers [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, I actually figured it out myself but your response is appreciated. The "sneaky" way is great, but I need a list of all categories so I can plan effectively. First thing I tried was to add the $category.num$ in tiny light grey type to the bottom of my category indexes so I can see and it's basically un-noticeable to visitors. Second and more useful for my needs was to take the basic categoryMenu template and add $category.num$ just after the category name link. After publishing I have a quick and dirty (printable) reference at hand with category names followed by category numbers.
As ever, you folks provide some of the best support I've ever had.
Thanks
Mike
