Creating a "Author Profile" page Can't Post

Hi,

first: great job, boys! The upgrade to AM2 was no problem an everything works fine!

No I want to "play" wit AM2. Is there a way with AM2 to create a page for every author with a short author-profile an links to all articles of this author?

I like to have a "View all articles of this author" link on every article-page. Maybe with the new features of AM2 there is a way to do it.

Can I youse placeholders from the table am2_accounts like "num", "username", "fullname" or "createdByUserNum" in the article templates?

Hi,

Here are some of the placeholders available on the article page that may be helpful for you:

$currentuser.num$
$currentuser.fullname$
$currentuser.email$
$currentuser.username$
$currentuser.createdbyusernum$

Previously for ArticleManager 1 I had made a tutorial for creating a "View all articles by an author" .

I will create an updated tutorial to do this with Article Manager 2 later this week.

I will also include steps in the tutorial to add an author profile which you can now do with Article Manager 2. :)

Re: [Damon] Creating a "Author Profile" page [In reply to] Can't Post

To expand on the ways this might be used, I am the web guy for an online literary journal. Right now, I use the article summary field, since we don't use summaries, for the author bio (profile). I have to record the same bio for the author in each article, even if the same author writes dozens of poems or short stories.

What we'd like to do from the user point of view, is offer a list of authors, each with a bio/profile, and be able to click on the author's name to see a list of their works, which are otherwise published under various categories such as "poetry" and "fiction." Also, would like to have the author's name on each work, or in the index pages, be clickable to bring up another page with all the works by that author. Finally, would like to only enter Author name and profice once, and then link that one author, and his/her profile, to all the works by them.

Sorry I couldn't think of more to ask for. Wink

Hi,

There is a number of different ways to set this up.

One option is to setup a top level category called "Authors" and sub-categories with each Authors name.
Category Example:

Authors
>>Damon Edis
>>Mike Briggs
>>Ross Fairbairn
>>Etc.

Here is an example of an Aricle Manager site setup using artists names as categories:
Tilsner Artists' Cooperative

Adding additional category fields for publishing author Bio/Profile would be very straight forward and allow you to enter the information once. You could click the Author name category link and see their profile.

Linking to a list of all the authors work could be done using the steps in "View all articles by Author" tutorial.

Does this sound like it would work for you? Let me know and I can go into further details.

Wow, and you work on Thanksgiving. Do you do windows? You guys are great!

Anyway, that could work, but each work by a particular author also needs to be under a Poetry, Fiction, Essay, or other subject matter category.

The site, in its present form, is viewable at www.kennesawreview.org/index.php - you have to type th index or you'll end up at the index.htm page which is the current site which I'm replacing/rebuilding. Go there and take a look at how I'm setting it up and then see what you think.

Thanks... Mark

Of course we work Thanksgiving! Of course, since we're in Canada, that was over a month ago... :) (But I'll take a share of the turkey from this one, too!)

Anyhoo. :) The easiest way to do this will be with the multiple categories option, which should be coming out pretty quickly. In the meantime, what you could do is setup the separate categories for your additional authors, and create an extra field for each article where you could enter in the URL to the author's biography page. Would something like that work for now?

Ah, Canada. Didn't realize that.

No, the URL field won't work. What we're shooting for is a page that lists all the Authors, which are links to a home page for each author that lists their bio and all their works that are posted on the site. The fact that the Author name is entered only once and then linked to as a category (so there's no chance of entering Author name incorrectly), and that the bio is also only entered once, are only added benefits.
