Alphabetize a subcategory of articles but only show next and previous buttons as needed

Hi,
I need to alphabetize one of my sub categories by athletes names but then I want to make sure that the next and previous buttons only show up based on if they are needed. The number of pages would be based on the number of athletes listed and how many are listed on the page. ie. if I have 22 athletes and only show 5 on a page, then there should be 3 pages. The previous button would not appear on the first page since it is not needed, the previous and next button would both appear on the second page, and the next button would not appear on the third page since it is not needed. Thanks.
