Search: Grouping and Organizing the result sets Can't Post

After testing the search feature it appears the search only looks for an occurrence of the search string anywhere in the title, body and extract. If the string appears it returns a listing in reverse order of the article number.

Can the search results be returned in any other format?

Can the search results be grouped by category?

I am assuming I can build a search results page that has numerous virtual includes by category, but that would be a little taxing on the server. Just curious if this has come up or is there something in the works with the search functionality.

Yes, you can control the article sorting for both publishing and search results from within the Article Manager Setup Options in the Article Sorting section. Here you have 3 sort fields to sort on.

You can change the order in which Article Manager displays and publishes articles by specifying a different sort order in this section. Articles are first sorted by the top field. If articles are found which have the same value for the first sort, they're sorted on the second field, then finally the third.

The default sort is first on Spare field 20 (the "featured" checkbox), then on date. This causes articles to be sorted by date, with featured articles displayed first. Both of these sort fields are, by default, numeric and reversed.

I'm not aware of a way to have search results grouped by category. By default search results are not grouped by category but by search relevance based on keywords, date and sort order. To have specific category search results, the site visitor can choose the specific category from the search dropdown list to search in.

Am I on the right track with what you were looking to do? Let me know.

Re: [Damon] Search: Grouping and Organizing the result sets [In reply to] Can't Post

I am trying to create a work around for not being able to have articles in multiple categories. The majority of my articles (90%) are accessed via two different approaches. 1st via the primary navigation structure (two levels of categories) and second by a cross referenced navigation structure. Since AM does not support articles in two categories, I am using the search feature for the secondary nav structure.

I am accomplishing this by placing a unique file string on every article to be referenced by the search function to provide the secondary nav cross reference. The problem is it creates a giant listing of all articles. What I would like is the search results be the subset of articles displayed by primary nav structure.

If you go to www.lotuselan.net/test.asp you will see the primary nav on the left. (It is repeated in the very top of the header) The cross reference is based one of the 6 sub-types of cars. The sub-types are indicated on the bottom right of the header. If you click on "Series 1 and 2" you will see the list. I would like the list to be organized like the primary nav or at least grouped my major primary nav sections.

I have tried:

1. A page with multiple search includes (27 of them). No one will wait that long for a response.

2. I tried a search.cgi&cat=4&cat=5&cat=6&keyword=test, but it only picks up one cat for the search.

What do you suggest?

thanks in advance

Hi Jeff,

I took a look at your site, navigation and search results pages. Unfortunately I'm not aware of another method to have your search results organized to look like your navigation other than the multiple search includes method you already tried.

If anyone else has any suggestions or have had success having articles display for multiple categories, please post here.
