Front Page of AM Can't Post

Hi folks, well another comment from me, oh joy, well i have been working with AM for a few weeks and find it to be an outstanding program. The support is outstanding to (try and get that from microslop) Kudo's to the team.

But... ahhh that famous little word.... Everything seems to be just what is needed in AM, and what is needed is usually reprogrammed pretty quickly :) but it seems to me that the true weak spot in AM is the front page.

AM is not user friendly from my point of view in regards to the front page, maybe its just me but i think we all need to discuss what we would like the front page to be able to do in order to make AM truelly awsome.

I know i have seem many good ideas in the forums, and i hope this area will help organize those thoughts.

some ideas i am thinking about ( prolly your idea) are:

1. Designable layout.
a. possibly a second syndicate system for this, one that we can add pics and customize. I dont want
to tweak out my syndicate with pics now because i intend to let people use it and i cant afford the
bandwith the pics would use on other peoples sites. Also i branded my syndicate and dont need
that on my front page, but want it on others.

b. Maybe a check box for making a story a TOP Story, this would keep the story in the proper cat, but
also allow it to be used on the front page. I have problems with useing the number of articles to
display, i want to control the number on the show_headlines, but i want a different number of them
elsewhere..

Well been up all night doing templates so i will let the rest of you all sort this out and hopefully add or suggest new and better ideas

Thanks

I agree... [In reply to] Can't Post

On top of the feature requests I've made where we can do the same sort of things discussed here for the category index pages, we would need yet another area in the admin page to allow us to put some content on the front page.

I personally just use the "front page" now as a 404.html page or a site map page depending on what I need. I usually create a category called Home that I assign to index.html. But even then, I have to create a hidden "includes" category where I create content articles for each category and then use XSSI to include the proper hidden content on the proper category page.

Just a few (in my opinion) minor improvements and all of this extra work would be eliminated for me. I think they're working on it here.

WebGuys, Thanks for your feedback.

>1. Designable layout.

How do you mean? How do you want to change the layout that you unable to?

>a. possibly a second syndicate system for this, one that we can add pics and customize.

One of the features that I would really like to get into 2.0 is use definable published indexes. So instead of having to use the ones we provide for you under setup options and trying to fit them into all the things you want to do you'll be able to just create more if you need. Or in addition to a article and printer page, maybe you could have it publish (or generate) another type of article page with another template and naming scheme. That's what I'd really like to do, we'll have to see how far we can take it.

>b. Maybe a check box for making a story a TOP Story,

Does the "featured story" in v1.20 handle this or were you thinking of something more?

Hi Ken,

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Do you have a link to your site or frontpage so I can get a better idea of what you're trying to do? Thanks!

Sure....

http://www.happydranch.com

http://www.wormdigest.org

Sites need to be able to put home page specific content into their content management systems. The only way I've found to do that so far is to make "HOME" a category, then make a hidden "includes" category where I put content for the category index pages into articles then I use XSSI to include them on the proper category index page.

Re: [KenGary] I agree... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all, one of the things i want to do is show like 1 article from each category on the home page, but still control how many i show on the category index page.

I guess i want the front to have the TOP STORY but each cat to have all the stories from that cat.

I like the button to make a story go to the top of the list, but it would be better if it caused it to be displayed on the front page and within the cat it belongs in...

I like this too... [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, I'd like to display X number of articles/headlines on the home page while displaying all articles/headlines in the category they are in.

I agree, right now getting creative with your home page and AM is not easy. I have gotten around by using the syndicate features:

http://www.almaweb.org

http://www.azhumane.org/index_new.shtml

But if wish I didn't so I don mess with the syndicate.js

Ideally, It would be nice to have two templates for the index page... one for your HOME PAGE and a SECOND ONE for your AM Home Page.

This way, you can customized and integrate AM articles into your site's home page with Top Articles, or whatever articles you choose, with pics, and/or thumnails, a read more link, a list of top stories, headlines with thumnails, summaries with "readmore" links, and basically anything you anf think of, etc, etc

I know this may be a bit too much but:
