Creating filenames based on headlines? Can't Post

I'm just trying to see if there is a way to make this happen rather than manually typing the headline names, even if it was limited to, say, 15 characters.

Like: .../artman/publish/news/091806_president-names-prov.shtml

Or maybe a separate folder based on the date? Or maybe making the file name react to a ranking of some sort. Under our old system, editors take the (newspaper) stories and rank them 1 to 9, and our file would output a file like 9_mens_socc.html and show them in order based on the ranking. Is there something close to this that I could build into my install?

I've seen the tutorial for adding a date to the filename, but I don't know if the other stuff is possible with Article Manager. Any ideas?

I haven't tried this, but...

$art_name$ = the title of the article
$art_date$ = the date of the article

Suppose you were to insert one of the above in the filename field of the article editor... I somewhat doubt it will parse and actually translate into something meaningful, but based on what I've read here (under Reference --> Article Detail / Printer. Scroll down to "document placeholders" for a more full listing), something like this seems the most promising...

Hi Teo.

Thanks for posting!

If you are looking for a way to rank your articles, you could actually create a new field in your system that writers could use to enter a number into each time they create a new article. Then, you could have Article Manager sort the articles based on that field.

Do you think that would work? Let me know what you think and I can go into more detail for you Smile.

Ross:

Yeah, I was thinking of doing that, or maybe building in a drop down into the interface to let people choose the numbers.

My bigger concern is the filename thing. I guess I could have my writers type their headlines with-hyphens-between-everything, but I was hoping there could be a way to add it in, or at least have it be started in the same way the javascript worked (or at least seemed to - I couldn't get it to work for me) in adding in the date into the filename (http://www.interactivetools.com/iforum/P48363/).

Unless there's a way to sort the files into a folder system based on date (such as making a new folderset of 06/10/05/article_12.shtml), I really need some help on making the filenames a little more intuitive that just numbers based on the start date of installing Article Manager, since we'll be adding in article from earlier this year.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help thus far.

Hi again Teo.

Article Manager actually replaces any spaces with underscores so if you already had the JavaScript working to automatically enter the date in, your writers would just need to enter their file name any way they like. The spaces will be replaced automatically.

Does that sound like it would work? Give it a shot and let me know what you think Smile.
