Controlling The Number Of Articles On Index Page Can't Post

One of my categories consists of a large number of summary-only peices. These items all get published on the front page and tend to overwhelm articles from other categories. Is there a way to limit the number of articles from one particular category which appear on the front page? Thanks...

Re: [gary] Controlling The Number Of Articles On Index Page [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Gary,

Article Manager hasn't been set up to limit articles in a specific category, but I can think of a few work-arounds which might get you closer to what you're trying to do.

The easiest method I could think of would be to manually hide some of the articles from your Front Page. Since the articles are sorted by date, you could try setting the dates on older articles in this category to be in the past, like the year 2000. This would sort the articles to the absolute bottom of the list, and they'd only be shown at the very end of your search results.

Another approach would be to use the Top Headlines (aka Latest Headlines, or Headlines By Cat) as a main page, instead of the Front Page. The Top Headlines is a list of categories, with a static amount of articles under each. By doing this, you would be able to limit the number of articles displayed in the offending category, but you would also limit the number of articles displayed for all the other categories too. Also, the articles would be sorted by category, and it would be messy creating a "More Articles" link which wouldn't display the same articles again. This solution would require some major template modifications. Let me know if you'd like more information on this approach.

A third approach would be to set the category to be "hidden". Hidden categories still get published, but do not show up in the Category List, and their articles do not show up on the Front Page or in the Search Engine. You could then "include" a limited number of articles from this category on your main page - either above or below your main list of articles - by using Luke's Server Side Include trick, using the category's Headlines include (or its Index page). This approach would also require some major template modifications. If you need any help achieving this, or some clarification, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
