Category Main Pages: Want to have a description, etc Can't Post
On the category main pages, I'd like to have a field to edit a description of the category. Plain text that would get put on the page. I'd choose to put it in the H2.

It would also be useful to have additional fields to define like in the articles editor for each article.

Any way to do this? Do I need to resort to PHP or creating different templates? If so, this keeps my client from being able to edit the text from within Article Manager...

Hi.

Thanks for posting!

Unfortunetly there Article Manager isn’t setup for category descriptions. What I’ll do in the meantime is add your name to the list of people who are also interested in this feature.

When the developers start looking at the next version of Article Manager, after MySQL, they’ll be able to look at including this.

MySQL support sounds good. Maybe there'd be a way to add fields to categories that way...?

Hi again.

With the release of MySQL I am sure there will be quite a few new ideas on how to get things don with Article Manager. I don’t have any specifics at this time, however, if there is going to be a way I am sure it will be used because this is a fairly popular request.

Hi,

This sounds similar to an issue I had where I wanted category specific links to appear on each category index page.

The solution I came up with was to create a series of simple shtml files that would be hardcoded with the relavent links. This made sense because I would have had to type in the information once, no matter how I did it. I named the files using the category names followed by "_links.shtml". I can also edit these files if desired.

The links are placed in the appropriate category index pages using the following:

<center>
<p>
<h3>$cat_name$ Links</h3>
<p>
<font class="artname"><!--#include virtual="/publish/links/$cat_name$_links.shtml" --></font>
</center>
<!-- end of links -->

Perhaps something like this will work for you.

Are your category names one word without a space? Mine happen to be more than one word, such as "Our Products" or "Who We Are", and the client wants to stick with that. I'm looking for a workaround to this, and I'm resorting to PHP to do some kind of lookup, e.g. if category name = "Our Products" then insert category code = "products" . Definitely awkward and it seems there should be a simpler way.

Hi,

Some categories are 1 word and some are more than 1 word, with spaces between the words. This does not seem to create any problem.

Hi jprickitt ,

Thanks for posting.

While there isn't a placeholder that is available to control a paragraph of content like you have described, I know that in the past some Article Manager users have posted a "Summary Only" article to their category, and then selected it as "Featured" so it's at the top of the page.

That may be a quick and easy solution for you, though that article will be added to the headlines lists and search results and such. Try that out and let me know if that helps Smile

Just wanted to put my $0.02 in the hat for category descriptions...that would be way cool and would allow me to cross reference from one category to a related category, and probably other juicy things...!

Just so you know... Article Manager 2, currently in beta, will allow this feature. :)
