Cant assign to multiple categories, what about copying? Can't Post

Hi,

I understand that the notion of assigning one article to multiple categories has been discussed and the final word has been that it is not possible but may be considered after more pressing feature requests (like MySQL).

I have undertaken to develop my site fully aware of this limitation, but wondered if there was a quick and easy way to copy the articles of one category to another at the back end, i.e. to go into my FTP program and copy and paste files, possibly do some renaming etc. etc. as the number of articles that I must recreate is substantial.

Also, has a workaround to this problem been provided by anyone?

Thanks alot for your input.

Hi there.

Thanks for posting and welcome to the board!

While I haven’t come across an elegant way to duplicate articles that you have already created, there is a neat little trick you can use when creating new articles. Right after you have finished creating the new article and are looking at the “Article has been saved” page, hit the F5 button (refresh). That will duplicate the article you just created. One quite note. You’ll need to add your images to the article after it has been duplicated. So, enter all the text, select the first category, etc but don’t do anything with images. Then save the article, hit F5 so you have two copies, then go back and add your images.

Does that sound like it’s going to work? Give it a shot and let me know how you make out Smile.

1. That's cool for new articles. Any ideas about already established articles. I would imagine many users would, in retrospect, like to utilise the content of old categories in new categories. Even an inelegant backend solution might be preferable to reproducing every article. What would one need to do - is it possible to save shtml pages, rename them and place them in a different category folder? Or are these daredevil antics prohibited?!

2. As far as modules and mods go, I wondered about functionality similar to the 'save as' operation in windows; an article would be opened and, if 'save as new' was opted instead of 'save' then any changes would result in a new document rather than revisions to the old one. Eg.
  • Create article with category=X, press 'Save', article "article+categoryX" is created (as per current system)
  • open "article+categoryX", change to category=Y, press 'Save as New', article "article+categoryY" is created

Is there a kluge that might accomplish such a task - What are my chances of seeing an interactive tools addon like this?!

InteractiveTools is still the best.

Yours clutching at straws, Matt.

Hi.

Thanks for posting again Smile.

So far, I haven’t come across a solution to the article duplication thing but it is on our feature request list so it’s something our developers are aware of. Keep an eye on our monthly newsletter to be as up to date as possible with future releases.

Feel free to post up anymore ideas on how you would like to see it handled so that the developers can see the range of options you are looking for Smile.

How about going to the article.dat file, copying the line of the article in question, pasting it at the bottom, giving it the next article ID then changing the total number of articles at the top? You'd also want to change the category.

Hi there,

That's certainly possible, although unless you're making a lot of copies... it would almost be easier to simply add multiple copies in manually. This also means that it would show up multiple times in the index.

However, we've been discussing possible workarounds, so keep an eye on the next newsletter to see what we come up with. :)
