Adding a menu bar	Can't Post

Hi,

I have created a menu bar and would like to put it in the right-hand column above "Latest Headlines".

I tried modifying my headlines default template by adding it to the top of that template, but it showed up in the middle of the page and not in the right-hand column.

What is the correct way to insert my new menu bar?

Like I got you to do in that other thread, could you post your headlines template up for me to take a look at?

One thing to keep in mind is that two different headlines templates are going to come into play here:

/headlines_bycat.html
/headlines/default.html

so you'll probably want to be making similar changes in both of them. I look forward to hearing from you Smile

Thanks for your post! :)

First, take a look at the documentation here:

The "headlines_bycat" template is used to give your visitors a quick categorized glance at the latest headlines. It list categories, and up to a certain number of articles for each. This page is often included via SSI's on other pages.

The headlines/default.html template (category headlines) is used to publish each of the Category Headlines pages.

In other words, the headlines by category shows (by default) 3 headlines from each category, whereas the category headlines shows 10 (by default) headlines from just that category.

Thanks, that clarifies things.

I still don't know the correct way to add my new menu bar to the headlines default template. When I add it at the top of that template, it shows up in the middle of the page and not at the top of the right-hand column.

Thanks for the follow-up!

You should be able to place your new menu in a table all by itself at the very top of either the headlines_bycat template or the /headlines/default.html template file. If this is not working I't most likely that some bit of code in another template file is throwing things off. What you may want to do is also provide us with a link to where we can see the error happening, and perhaps post up the code that your using for the new menu that you have created. :)

Hi Chet,

Here is our headlines default template with the addition of the menu bar code (which points to the location of the menubar.html file) and also the menubar.html file. We used an automatic menu bar generator to create the menu bar, and there is probably something in the code that is messing up the placement of the menubar.

We want the menubar to appear above "Latest Headlines" in the right-hand column.

(Please note that this is a "hidden" test page that was created to show you the problem we are having. That is why the default template has been renamed to default test.)

Thanks for the sample link an templates!

I have been looking over this for you today and I when I am on the sample page you have setup, it actually looks to me like the menu is on the top of the right hand side; just above the latest headlines section.

That's where you wanted it to go right? Are you seeing it show up there as well?

I am thinking now that you might have got this sorted out but let me know if you still needed a hand Smile

Hi Ross,

That page I gave you the link for looks different now than it did yesterday when I posted my message. It appears that the page is not even referencing the template I have set for that category, and I have no idea why (those menu buttons are an old design, nothing to do with the new menu bar and should not even be appearing anywhere on that page).

I'll have to look into it tomorrow and get back to you then.

Okay, let me try this again Smile

I have modified the headlines_bycat template to include a menu bar at the top (see attached file).

The result is that, rather than the menu bar appearing where I want it, at the top of the right hand column (above "Latest Headlines"), the menu bar appears in the middle of the page.

I've attached the modified headlines_bycat template as well as the menubar file to this message.

Hi

I see what you are talking about now. The only thing this time though is that I don't actually know why that is happening.

Well, I sort of know. Basically, the menu you are including is done entirely in JavaScript and it looks like that JavaScript is set to just float in a specific location on your page. I am wondering what would happen if you tried adjust the setting called offset x and offset y, but I don't know if that will help.

JavaScript really isn't out thing here so I am actually thinking the best thing to do would be to get back in touch with the people you created the script and see if they can help you get the menu anchored up in the top right of your page.

It *is* the offset variables that move the menu around, but unfortunately I can only set an absolute position on the screen, so if the window is resized, it moves the menu around.

Is there a way to get the same effect of fly-out menus within Article Manager rather than using a separate Javascript file?
