AM syndication - with limitations Can't Post
The webfeed feature in AM is really neat - but I'm wondering if there's a way of using it to give non-members of a particular site a taste of what's inside wihtout allowing them in to the rest of the site.

To do that, the webfeed would possibly have to publish to a different template - is that possible ?

Anybody got any experience of this ?

In order to offer any suggestions on how to set this up I think I'll just need a few more details from you and a clarification of what you were hoping to do.

Were you hoping to set up your webfeed generator so people could see the headlines without seeing the content of the articles?

You can actually modify the syndicate.js file to customize it to your needs a bit (for example, you could remove the link so people won't be able to look at the full articles).

If you could provide a bit more detail for what you were hoping to set up I'd be happy to offer some suggestions on ways to do this.

Sorry - I haven't explained properly. We are going to limit access to the site which contains lots of members-only information and we want casual browsers to be able to have a taste of what the organisation does without giving them free access. So we'd like the webfeed generator to show just the toip five news stories and not allow access beyond that.

I currently manage the news pages using AM. What I'd like to do - maybe - is use the webfeed generator to put a limited webfeed on the site for public access while the actual news pages are members-only access.
As it stands the webfeed generator would allow casual users a way in avoiding the site login.

Do you follow?

For each article you have in Article Manager there will only be one published article page. This means that if it is published to a password protected folder that only your members can get access to then no one without a username or password would be able to access these pages.

One way you might be able to set this up is to have your webfeed generator output the content of the article along with the title and date, etc. This way you could create a link that said "Click here to preview our 5 top articles" and clicking the link would take the user to a page with the 5 articles on it.

Does this sound like something that would work for you? If so, feel free to let me know and I'll let you know how you can set something like this up. Smile

Hi Alastair

Thanks for getting back to us!

You should just be able to set up a syndicate to this category the same way you would any other.

You can access your syndicate you’ll need to use a link similar to this:

www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/syndicate.cgi

Once that link opens there will be some instructions on the page to guide you through setting everything up.

Could you give this a shot and let me know how you make out?

Mike - I'm coming back to this idea of allowing casual visitors to the site access to the top five stories only.

That means I need to be able to publish a syndicated feed to a non-password protected folder - correct ?

But the syndication script only publishes links to the stories - not the stories themselves. In other words people would be able to see the headlines but not the actual story. Do you see a way round this ?

Thanks for the post!

One thing you could do is set-up a topmost parent category, all articles added to this category could be published to a non-password protected directory. All the rest of your website categories could then be sub cateogories of this topmost category. Each of the submenus would publish articles to a password protected directory. :)

The end results would be similar to this:

Top Category (non-password protected)
--> SubMenu A (password protected)
--> SubMenu B (password protected)
--> SubMenu C (password protected)

With a set-up like this you could publish your top five stories to the "Top Category" then, when this story no longer is one of the top stories you could simply change the category it is published to. :)
