4000 articles - site now slow - help! Can't Post

Hi

I'm a long term user of Article Manager 1.2 and have been very impressed with it. However we now have about 4000 articles and the site's home page is taking longer and longer to open. We haven't archived anything because we want to keep the existing page names as there are referral links to them all over the web.

Any suggestions as to how we can improve the speed? The site is http://www.soundsxp.com

Many thanks.

Hi Paul,

Well, what you're running into is bascially a limitation of Article Manager 1. It's got a recommended maximum of about 2500 articles. The fact that it's been running well up to 4000 is a testament to your server. :)

However, have no fear -- that's exactly what archiving was intended for. And you don't have to worry about the reciprocal links, as Article Manager will put up static pages to their new archived location, so all of the old links will continue to work.

Alternately, you can upgrade to Article Manager 2, and switch to a MySQL database.

I hope this helps. :)

Hi Donna

Thanks for the reply. So when I archive the old articles they will still have the same names eg http://www.soundsxp.com/3945.shtml, etc? If that's the case I don't mind as I really don't need anything like that many still in AM. I take it the only downside will be the search script on the site? Will that only search on pages left in AM?

Plus how easy is it to convert from AM 1.2 to AM 2?

Cheers

Paul

Hi there,

The final URL will be something different (a dynamic link), but the old filenames will be maintained and redirected to your new dynamic link -- so you'll never have any dead links.

Your users will be given the option to search the "live" articles, or they can search through any of the archives.

Converting from Artman 1 to Artman 2 can be a little complex, but it mostly depends on how much modification you've done to your site. For a plain jane Article Manager 1 installation, it's practically seamless. If you've made a lot of modifications, it can be a little trickier.

If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, our Priority Consulting team can give you a hand. Drop an email to consulting@interactivetools.com with as much information about your site as you can (including FTP details if you can, so they can pop in and take a look at your templates directly) and they can give you a quote for how long it would take to get the whole site converted over. :)

Hi

I've tried it on 300 early files and they look like this:

http://www.soundsxp.com/100.shtml

Where am I going wrong?

Hi,

Thanks for the post!

I'm not sure what may have happened with your first request, we generally resppnd to all our e-mail within 24 hrs. If you would like to re-submit this request I'll be happy to take a look at how things are set-up and see what we can do for you. You can send us a support request here:

https://www.interactivetools.com/support/email_support.cgi

Also you may want to consider archiving some of your articles, 4000 articles is a pretty hefty number for Article Manager 1. One last thing to consider would be upgrading to Article Manager 2 using a MySQL database, Article Manager 2 is much quicker and using a MySQL database will mean that you can publish as many articles as you like without worry. :)

How does this sound? I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
