Publishcron 1.1 issue Can't Post

Hi there!

I installed publishcron 1.1 as directed in the instructions included in the .zip file. Everything went swimmingly until I added the tags in the admin templates that call publishcron via IMG tags. When I went to publish an article, the moment the "Article has been saved" screen came up my web browser totally stalled. It was stuck for what seemed like forever. When it finally responded again it was slower than hell -- and when I tried to access my rss.xml it displayed an XML error message.

So I ran the "browser test" (using the page1 inquiry in the browser line) and my browser "unstuck," the RSS file was fixed, and everything was back up to speed.

So to my n00b way of looking at it, I think my Apache webserver got tangled up when the CGI was called via the image tags and something went screwy. I'm almost afraid now to call the publishcron.cgi in any fashion other than through the browser using the page1 query for fear that I'll have to sit for another who knows how long waiting for Apache to recover.

So here are my questions: A) do any of you know what is going wrong when publishcron is executed via the IMG tags, B) will the same thing happen if I set up publishcron in a crontab schedule, and C) is there any way for me just to automate the running of the browser page1 query (which I KNOW works) instead of calling the publishcron itself?

Re: [Zyllyx] Publishcron 1.1 issue [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for posting, Zyllyx, and for trying out the new RSS tutorial.

The embedded image thing is definitely a hack, but I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it. The best solution would be to call the publishcron from the crontab, it's unlikely to have the same problem since you can normally call it from the browser with no trouble.

If you don't have access to the cron, you also might experiment with other ways of calling it, like placing it in a tiny iFrame. If nothing else works, you might be left with having to put a link to launch publishcron in your interface.
