Hitcounter add-on (release!) Can't Post
Hi all,

Here we go... a working hitcounter script for use with our Article Manager, Realty Manager and Auto Manager products.

The attached zipfile contains a readme.txt which contains instructions on how to install and integrate it, as well as a brief explanation of how to make it work with any webpage...

[ EDIT: Monday 16th, 11am: updated readme.txt, which contained misleading information on how to get your SSI's going. Updated script to return content-headers. ]

Cool idea and I've installed it as per the docs (even managed to CHMOD on my own!) and republished the pages, but no discernable difference. Should the hit count output where the include line is? Or should I be calling the cgi script in the browser?

Hi tmaffin,

There was a small path glitch which I've fixed in the above zipfile. Download that new one, and upload the hitcounter.cgi file over your old one.

However, it doesn't sound like that was the problem in your case - you didn't see anything at all? When it's working, you should see some plain text saying "Page hits: 1" at the location of the SSI in your page. You don't have to call the script directly at all. However, having said that - that's a good way to help identify the problem. If you can get the script to run directly in your web browser, then you know that the problem is with your SSI.

Hello Benjamin, is this script using a different data page for each article or just one big data file? I read your other thread where you said it would be better to use one data file per article to get things moving fast but the thread stopped abruptly and there were no more news about your hitcounter...

The script ended up being written to store all the hit count data in a single file. Feel free to try it out on your site and let us know what you think. It’s attached to the first post in this thread.

I've just installed this on my server and i'm getting an error ...

That's an error code message for SSI on a windows server. Re-check the path you gave the SSI.

I'm using a Windows server, could you help me determine my correct root path ?

I adjusted it to what I thought it should be, and now get this error: Failed to execute CGI : Win32 Error Code = 123

I'm using the following: D:/inetpub/vhosts/sescoops.com/httpdocs/artman/exec/hitcounter.cgi?id=$art_num$

That's the path for my Article Manager "Publish Dir" under the "Server" tab ...

Path looks right. Might be a permission problem.

When accessing it directly you get an error:

Couldn't open file! at D:\inetpub\vhosts\sescoops.com\httpdocs\artman\exec\hitcounter.cgi line 29.

Try playing with permissions...755 777 or equiv to those on a windows box...

Mike,

Has anybody using a Windows server gotten this to work? My web host keeps telling me you can't CHMOD things on Windows servers - but one of his tech guys could rewrite part of the script for me (for a fee, of course) to get it working ... This doesn't seem right ..

Michael,

Thank you for your fast response. I'm still lost and my web host's customer service is really not very helpful at all. Switching to a Windows-based server seems to have been a big mistake, nothing but headaches and not getting scripts able to run.

My web host said the script is most likely configured for UNIX servers and that he has a programmer that could modify it to work - for $80 ($20 x 4 hours of work) ..

I think that's totally screwy .... do you know of anybody with a Windows server that's gotten it to work?

If not, where can I find Windows-compatible scripts? :(

I wonder if you could help me locate the problem. I cannot access the hitcounter.cgi even in my browser after testing it with permissions set to 777 and 755. I get a 500 Internal Server Error at http://www.suredevelopmentandrealestate.com/cgi-bin/listman/exec/hitcounter.cgi

Thanks for posting.

I took a quick look at the hit counter, and it's pretty outdated (over 2 year since anyone has edited it) so I don't think that this particular hit counter is going to work.

There are plenty of other things that you could use. Here is a link to some on HotScripts.com:

Since the hit counter doesn't work anymore, it's probably best to use a different script. I actually found an interesting article that covers this topic that you may find helpful:
